Where could I order (for a cheap price) some sine-wave grating contrast
sensitivity test prints? If you have some experience with those, could you
tell how reliable is the test and is it difficult to manage the correct
illumination?

Most vision professionals use only high-contrast tests, though assessment of
contrast sensitivity may be useful in certain cases. Although I cannot
provide the information requested, I would also be interested in getting it.

When I suffered from CME, this included reduction in contrast sensitivity.
There was no point in measuring it, however, since I knew what condition had
caused it and the appropriate treatment. I just hoped for the best possible
results. (Recovery from CME can be adequately assessed by using
high-contrast tests alone, at least in my experience.)

Contrast sensitivity tests are not cheap.   They come with instructions
including correct illumination which are not that easy to achieve in
standard eye exam clinics.  The test is time consuming to administer and
frankly, for most patients are of little value.  I have a projector slide
and handheld near test developed by Dr Ginsberg, system is about 20 years
old.  I seldom use it, though it has proven useful to demonstrate to
patients with neuro disease (ie MS) why their vision feels hazy to them
despite their 20/20 acuity.

The best test systems have an internal  illumination control, these systems
cost several thousand dollars.

As to reliability, you will have to review the literature to compare results
between systems.

Thanks. I think I may design my own test (mostly with sine-wave gratings)
and print it with appropriate equipment. I believe I should be able to make
some before and after -type of measurements with that.

Pauli,

We are working with an established company to develop just such a
self-test, however if you do create this kind of do-it-yourself
contrast sensitivity test we may be interested in participating in
production.
