Dear John,
First, I want to thank you for helping me set up
the "myopiafree forum". An excellent idea.
Second, you have confirmed Raphaelson's remarks
about "the printer's son".
For a review of Francis Young's study of the
plus (bifocal) is is very clear that ONLY prevention
is possible, and only at the threshold. The decision
to take "preventive" actions must rest with the
individual concerned with it. As you know from
my book I advocated that my sister's children
wear the plus -- to keep their distant vision
clear through the school years.
I am very pleased that you pass all legal test
for flying, both military and FAA.
With the above in mind.

Otis> 65 years.

3. It depends on what you mean by "true" refractive status.
Most vision checking is done using the so-called "subjective"
method. By that method, my refractive status is about -6 diopters.
> 3. Have you tried plus lenses yourself? If you have, what is the result?
> When did you try
Otis> From Francis Young's study it is VERY CLEAR that the
plus can only be used for prevention -- as I have stated
many times. Once you begin wearing that over-prescribed
minus all the time, there is no expectation of any "improvement".
That is the real impact and meaing of the Oakley-Young study.
That is why I devoted my efforts to getting the "facts" straight
concerning the provement behavior of the fundamental eye.
They had a "choice", where I did not. Once you begin
wearing that minus, your eyes will go "down" by -1/2 diopter
per year (average) and it is IMPOSSIBLE to "reverse" that
situation. The "battle" and the "war" are lost when you
begin wearing the minus. In my opinion.
> 4. Why are the plus "test" subjects are young children?
Otis> Certainly NOT MY CALL. This was the choice of
Francis Young in his study. My sister's children were
about 13 years old when they were declared to be
"nearsighed". I respected their intelligence and
motivation and explained the either-or choice
THEY HAD TO MAKE. For THEIR visual future -- they
made the "better" choice. This is again the
result of Raphaelson's description of the "attitude"
of the "Printer's Son".
> 5. Are you warning everyone about the side-effects of overkill plus
> lense use?
Otis> I suggest that a person examine the scientific fact
concerning the dynamic behavior of the eye -- as I presented
them in my book, "How to Avoid Nearsighedness". If they
judge that these "facts" are bogus, then their action is
simple. Just do not wear the preventive plus. And in
due course they will get "deeper" into is, and when
the begin "seeing" 20/70 on the eye chart, there will
be NO CHOICE but to prescribe a minus lens. The issue
of "prevention" will always be difficult for that reason.
> Or anyone else, if you have info on these questions, I want to know.
Otis> Always glad to respond.
Best,
Otis

Dear John,
Subject: Posting a statement of your experience.
I have posted your remarks on my site, and then "Aeronautical College"
under "opposition #2"
In that manner, a student, say at 20/40 can evaluate the "risks" of
prevention against the proven fact
that the natural eye goes "down" at the rate of 1.3 diopters in four
years at West Point. (Range -1.1 diopters to -1.6 diopters).
This might put his between the rock and a hard place -- but he will be
duly informed.
Best,
Otis

This gives the totally erroneous impression that everybody who goes to
West Point becomes myopic, which is absurd. You are attempting to lump
the statistics from two different groups: those who are predisposed to
myopia and those who aren't. You are violating the rules of
statistics.

You are welcome but it is not serving the purpose anymore. It became a
bashing board, with all due respect there are statements I do not
approve. I have stopped the activity, the forum is NOT accessible any
further. Please do your postings about me on SMV where I can see it. I
am sure Dr. Judy and others who visit I-see forums are protecting my
interest against misquotations.
I will respond to your questions later.
