I am a big film buff and nothing annoys me more than missing
something which was on the screen in the cinema, yet was mysteriously
absent from the TV version.
So can I have an opperation to burn out the top and bottom of my retina
so I can enjoy widesceen vision on a permanent basis?
I would buy a new TV but there are years of life still left in my 4:3 set.
I was thinking I could do a DIY job and burn out my retina with a magnifying
glass but I an slighty worried I would end up permantly blind.
TIA. Trev.

That would not solve your TV problem, the missing stuff on the TV will still
be missing and you would have the added problem of not perceiving the top
and bottom of the TV. So you would see even less than was present on the
cinema screen.
To get the missing stuff you need to watch letterbox movies on TV. But from
your previous posts it appears that you are made irrationally angry by the
black space that appears on the top and bottom of your 4:3 TV set when
letterbox movies are displayed. You choice is to have this black space and
see everthing that was in the cinema or to not have the black space and not
see everything that was in the cinema.

Buying a new TV would allow you to see all that was in the cinema and not
have the annoying black space. You could keep your old TV for watching
original TV programming and use the new TV only for movies.
