I just got a new prescription that's -2.25 and -2.75. My doctor says this is
"quite strong". Is it?

Most doctors would call it "mild" to "moderate."

It's "strong" enough that you need glasses when you drive, go to a movie or
read from a blackboard. That's what your doctor was trying to convey,
probably in response to the implied question "do I really need glasses?"

I'm pleased to hear that for a couple of reasons - he seemed surprised that I
didn't already wear them all the time (I was -2.25 then) and I read that
beyond -2 its often the case that people need to. Is that your experience
also?
Thanks

Dear lise,

What is your concern about a
"strong prescription"?

That you will not longer be able
to get along without your -2.5 diopter
glasses?

Dear Lise,

Please disregard Otis's postings.  He is not in the medical profession and
not in any position to give medical advise.

Thank you!

"Need" is pretty subjective - it's obvious you don't "need" them for
everything.

Mostly people wear glasses full time because it's a hassle taking them off
and on.

My advice is don't worry about the effect on your eyes. Human research shows
that myopia follows pretty much the same pattern whether you wear glasses or
not.

Wear them to drive. Otherwise use common sense. Be skeptical when anyone
tells you there are major effects either way - wearing or not wearing
glasses.

Thanks Mike that's good to hear. I don't need them for everything like you
say just for more challenging visual activities but when people are pointing
things out and you have to admit you can't see them, it makes you wonder if
you'r going blind!
