Hi, I am 46 and have had a -5.6 or so Rx since I was 12 yrs old.  In
the last 6 months, in low light, I have begun removing (lifting up) my
glasses to read something (or I turn up the lights). In good light I
can read fine. I do a lot of computer work and have no trouble there. I
am not a heavy reader but I am going to school full time in a month for
9 months so I may be doing more reading.  (And the light at the school
is not great!)

My current single vision glasses are 9 yrs old, losing their coatings,
and I have some insurance money this year (2005) to buy new glasses. So
I will buy some now and then again in 2 years (as per insurance plan).
I have not yet selected/seen an eye doctor so I cannot post my
prescription. I do not want lined bifocals, I want fairly small frames
with high index (thin) material.

As I learn more about presbyopia and how to correct it, it seems that
getting the 'right' progressives is a challenge. I  am very concerned
about a negative impact that progressives may have on my computer work,
plus having less peripheral vision and turning my head around to see
stuff doesn't sound that great either.

My question is:  Would you recommend I consider progressives now or
instead wait for 2 years (and just get my typical single vision lens
for distance now)?.  Would your recommendation be based on what my ADD
Rx for reading ends up being? Thanks very much, I really appreciate
your input!

The sooner you get them (and the lower the add power), the easier it will be
to adapt to progressives. Make sure you get top quality lenses that are
fitted by a competent optician (not someone who is less than 40 years old).
Do not go to LensCrafters.
