continuous wear vs daily disposable

Hi

I was one of the first people in the UK to use Acuvue disposable contact
lenses. I was on a routine where they were worn for a week and then replaced
with a new pair after a short (half a day) sabbatical. After a while my
optician recommended that to 'play safe' I should remove them each night and
clean/sterilise them using Oxycept (not the 1 step as it didn't kill some
bacteria?)  as well as replacing each week. This I must admit seemed an
added expense and increased hassle as I was always running out of the either
the sterilizing or neutralising solutions.

After years of this, my optician moved and I decided to simply ordered some
1-day acuvue from the net to try. I was under the impression that these
would be 'healthier' as they would be less likely to get contaminated. I
have just been to a new optician who has said that my eyes looked very good
and he would never had guessed I had worn contact lenses for so long.
However, he has recommended Bausch & Lomb PureVision contact lenses to be
worn for 30 days continuously. This has amazed me as it seems to be so
different to what I have previously been told. Their price is slightly
cheaper than the dailies and it was suggested that they would be better
(healthier?) for my eyes due to the increased oxygen transmission.

Being of a naturally cynical nature this seems too good to be true, so I was
looking for some independent opinions. Hopefully this is simply progress :)

Many thanks for any help given

J
PS
My wearing times are very varied but have been less than previous years
where I was wearing them for up to 14 hours a day 7 days a week, and
although there are some days where I leave them out I can also go through
several weeks of wearing them all day, every day.  However, I have slept in
them only twice in the last 3 years, when I had no choice.

Every provider will have differing opinions and preferences but,
IMO,it's
safer to wear a new lens every day (ie 1 day lens) than a 30 day
extended
wear lens (worn 30 days straight). I'm currently treating a patient
with a corneal ulcer who has been wearing a Night and Day lens.

Should also say that I'm 40, maybe important maybe not, but my old optician
said that after 40 I might start having problems wearing contacts.
