i went to my eye doctor last august and he told me that i had a little
astigmatism.
should i be worried?
i have blurry vision and i think i'm nearsighted.
my eye doctor gave me some low prescription eye glasses but i can't really
see well in them.
sometimes when i wear my glasses to see the board i see worse than without my
glasses.
is that normal?
i've had this problem since middleschool.
now i'm almost a senior in highschool.
i'm going to my eye doctor in august.
what advice can i get?

No. Astigmatism is a type of refractive error (something corrected by
glasses) and is due to the shape of your eyes.  No different really than
having a crooked nose.

It's normal if your glasses were for reading and not for distance vision.
If your glasses were for distance vision, then likely your glasses
prescription has changed.

Be sure to tell your doctor that you can't see well with the current glasses
and that you see better in the distance without them. Your doctor will be
able to tell you if your glasses need changing after you have your eye exam.

hello,
it's me again.
i can't see from the distance, so what you said makes no sense.
i really don't know if it's for distance or not.
all i know is that i can't see with my glasses.
i know that i can see okay from close up but not perfectly either.
this thing is so weird.
i guess i will just wait until i go to the eye doctor.
do you think with my low astigmastism that i need glasses?
i believe my vision is low enough in order to get glasses.
i think it 's around 11over 20 or lower.
i 'm just guessing.
i never saw my numbers before.
i think i should see my numbers next time.
can you please answer my question?
it will be a great help.
i'm confused.
i don't know if my vision is good or bad.
they are telling me so many things.
thanks

Ask your eye doctor to demostrate any new glasses prescription with a trial
frame and trial lenses, so you can compare with and without.

> i think it 's around 11over 20 or lower.

I doubt if the numbers will help you understand your vision, but you can ask
the doctor what your aided and unaided acuities are.

> can you please answer my question?

If by "my question" you mean "do I need glasses" and "why can't I see in the
distance with my current glasses", these are questions that can only be
answered by someone who has actually examined your eyes and measured your
acuity with and without glasses .

> it will be a great help.
> i'm confused.
> i don't know if my vision is good or bad.

Good and bad are relative terms, don't worry about the numbers.  The
question for you to think about is "Am I happy with my vision without
glasses, can I see the things I need to see to live my life?"  You have
already stated that you can't see well in the distance without glasses, so
that answers the question of whether your vision is good.

> they are telling me so many things.

Who are "they" and what are the "things"?

hello,
this whole thing is going on my nerves.
i don't know what to believe.
i went one eye doctor and he told  me that i need no glasses but then last
augut i go to another one and gives me glasses.
when i sit in the back of the class i feel like i have to move.
i cannot see but my eye doctor hasn't diagnosed me yet with nearsightness.
i realize that i can't see fom far but the doctor doesn't realize.
is that weird or i my making a mistake?
i even think that i'm a conbination of both. i think i'm nearsighted and
farsighted.
not sure .
do you think i should continue wearing my low prescription glasses?
i feel like i'm straining my eyes just to see with the glasses.
they hurt my eyes.
i think that they are really to low.
i've been on and off with glasses.
i find myself holding books close up and my family always askes me why?
i say because it's hard for me to see if i hold farther.
i think i should tell my eye doctor about my problems.
so my eye doctor can make sure everything is correct.
when i also wear the glasses , my vision is blurry.
i clean the glasses but it doesn't help.
what should i really do?
should i wear glasses or  not?
i need to figure this out before i go back to school in september.
any other advive will be helpful.
i will sure talk to my eye doctor, when i go in august.
thank you

Did you see well with them last august? It's pretty common for your
myopia to increase at your age.

Tell your doc your concerns. Keep at it until you are satisfied.  Have
him/her show you your new Rx with trial lenses and make sure they are
clear when you look far away.  Ask if they are optional for reading.

In august, post here both the old Rx and the new and let us know how it
works out (you may have to special request the old Rx, and you can tell
the doc about this group).

hello, william stacy
i actualy didn't really wear my glasses in august because i wasn't in school
and i didn't feel like i need them at home.
i only tried my glasses about three times.
two times at the eye doctor and once at home.
they looked okay but now i think they have a problem.
if i think that i'm nearsighted and maybe farsighted ,  how come my doctor
hasn't diagnosed me yet?
does she not see it or i my making a mistake?
i just don't get it.
i know that i can't see but my eye exam is not really prove it.
is that weird?
my eye exam is only proving part of it.
not the whole thing.
so what should i do then?
is it possible to call an eye doctor a lier?
can you please anwer my questions?
it will sure help
thank you for your support.

Dear Julliette,

It would help if you would post your last prescription.

Best,

Dear Julliette,

At the risk of being "beat up" by the ODs on this
"News Group" I would suggest reading my
site:

www.myopiafree.com

I would suggest "clicking" on the eye-chart
on the lower right hand side of the page.

It sounds like your prescription is almost "plano",
i.e., very weak.

You should read the visual-acuity eye chart
to determine what your eyes actually DO SEE.

You can respond here on sci.med.vision, or
just send me a message from my site.

I am NOT an optomerist, but I am interested
in the dynamic behavior of the natural eye
(under scientific control).

Juliette,

DON'T take this offline (responding via Otis's website).

You need the EYE DOCTORS on this site to help you separate fact from
fiction (hint: Otis provides fiction).

Dear Julliette,

Subject:  Trusting your own judgment.

You will indeed get many contradictory
recommendations on this site.

The worst is people who are patronizing
to you.

I suggest that you "think for yourself",
and check your own eye chart.

That way you will understand where
you stand -- visually.

Best,

Otis

how do i check my own eye chart?
i clicked on the site you gave me but it's no good
can you give me another website?

Julliette,
Otis is probably a kindly old man but he really is full of crap on some of
the things that he believes.  I suggest you do indeed follow you own
judgement carefully, and don't take too seriously any of the unscientific
proposals that Otis offers.

Dear Julliette,

Here is the site:

http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/oph/ped/IVAC/IVAC.html

Just type in "3 cm" for a normal monitor,
and 3 meters (10 feet) for distantce -- and
read it.

If that does not work the click on:

www.i-see.org

and down-load and print a chart.

Since you are almost "plano" I suspect you
will read from 20/25 to 20/30 vision (both eyes).

Some people suggest you consult with ONLY
"majority opinion" ODs.  I suggest that you
consult with a "second-opinion" OD, like
Steve Leung OD -- at:

www.chinamyopia.org

To get a more "rounded" perspective on the
subject of "vision protection".

Some people assume they "know it all" and
can dictate what you should "think".

That is why you find all the arrogant posts
against the science of the natural eye's behavior.

The ONLY issue is for you to determine what
you actually see on an eye chart -- nothing
more than that.

The idea that the people "jump the gun" before
you even read an eye chart demonstrates
their hubris.

Best,

Otis
otisbrown@pa.net - 14 Jul 2005 16:17 GMT
Dear Julliette,

Here is the eye-chart.

Just type in 3 cm (for line-length) and
3 meters (for distance) and step back and
determine which line you can read.

http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/oph/ped/IVAC/IVAC.html

Let us know how this works out.

Please ignore the unreasonable commentary about
you taking responsibility to read your own eye chart.

They do not trust either your intelligence OR motivation.

I believe you have both of these attributes.

Just remember not ALL ODs are like the "majority
opinion" attitude.  Read:

www.chinamyopia.org

for the "second opinion".

What ever the results -- it is worth knowing where
your stand.

Best,

Otis

"Which line can you read" is a sloppy way to measure acuity. Not that you
care. Don't worry about the size of her monitor. Don't tell her to stand at
the distance indicated.

> Let us know how this works out.

And what will _you_ do with the information?

According to you, if she can see 20/40, she doesn't need glasses because the
Department of Motor Vehicles says she doesn't. Never mind she says she can't
see. According to you and the DMV, she has no problem. Ostrich.

Will you surmise that her pl-050 has changed to -050-050 and now she needs
plus lenses? Probably.

Will you explain how the Chung study could find "no difference" between
those fully corrected and those undercorrected? No.

Will you explain how Goss could overcorrect 36 subjects without increasing
their rate of myopia? No.

Will you whine about being the target of "unreasonable commentary"? Yes.

Please show us some evidence that you have something to offer this poster,
or take your comments to alt.med.vision.improve.

Dear Mike,

The chart has the instructions written on it.

The 3 cm and 3 meters was for a quick check.
If she reads the full instructions she can read the
standard eye chart at 20 feet -- using RANDOM
letters.

You insult her intelligence in this matter.

+++++++

And what will _you_ do with the information?

So far, she has not yet read the eye chart.  I am not
going to do anything with the information.   Are you?
Why jump the gun.  Let her work at her own pace.
He complaint was that her "glasses" made her
distant vision POORER -- not better.  The next
step for her would be to find out how much poorer.

According to you, if she can see 20/40, she doesn't need glasses
because the
Department of Motor Vehicles says she doesn't.

That is the DMV standard.  If she passes it -- then it is HER DECISION
about wearing a strong minus -- NOT YOUR DECISION.

Never mind she says she can't
see.

She already has "prescribed glasses" and "can't see".

According to you and the DMV, she has no problem. Ostrich.

Your opinion.  You also insist that a minus lens has
NO EFFECT on the refractive state of the primate eye -- and
that has been conclusively denied on the basis of
"input" versus "output" scientific testing.

Will you surmise that her pl-050 has changed to -050-050 and now she
needs
plus lenses? Probably.

So far she has not even read the eye chart.  Why NOT WAIT
UNTIL SHE RESPONDS!

Will you explain how the Chung study could find "no difference" between

those fully corrected and those undercorrected? No.

Reference the Young-Oakley study.  Young stated that a
low-segment "plus" would be evaded by the children.
Since they had no instructions to look THROUGH the
plus the most likely ingnored it -- thus BOTH the
test group AND  the control group were wearing
the same strength minus lens.  Further, since
this was a "blind" study -- no one could even
check --at all.  The results are meaningless.

That is why your run a controlled study
of the primate eye.

Please show us some evidence that you have something to offer this
poster,
or take your comments to alt.med.vision.improve.

What in the world is your big hurry?  Why not wait until she responds.
NOTHING can happen until she does that.

Best,

Otis

We have already told you that only the doctor who actually examines your
eyes can help you out here,  we can't give specific advice about your
particular case without doing an eye examination.

You last had an exam almost a year ago, you only tried the glasses from that
exam once and now, if you vision is different, it is likely your
prescription has changed.

See your eye doctor for answers.
