Hi
Could someone let me know if the astigmatism indicated in the following
prescription will definitely require a toric lense, or may it be
possible to trial normal contacts? Cylinder is +0.75 in both eyes. I've
googled around and the only info I could find was that -0.75 is
marginal and normal lenses may fit in such circumstances. I don't know
if +0.75 is at the opposite extreme, or if the same may apply?

I have an appointment with an optician next week, just would like to
have an idea of what to expect and my options.
I need the contacts for a 7 day foot race in the Sahara desert, as it's
too expensive to RX wrapped polarised sunglasses. However, I've read
that dailies have a habit of drying out during the day and that due to
their high water content this can have an adverse effect on performance
-- is use in a hot climate likely to be a problem for dailies?
Daily lenses are really the only option considering the circumstances,
and Focus Dailies Toric are twice the cost here in the UK of the
standard Focus Dailies lenses.
thanks for any advice, much appreciated.
Jamie.

+ cyl is just a different convention than -cyl, same effect.
torics aren't necessary for a foot race
low water is best, probably silicone like vistakon advance (if you're
gonna take them out nightly), or pure vision for the whole trek; dailies
might dry out too. Focus night & day would work, but are pricey.

When is the race? You may be one of those lucky people like me who is hard to
fit...
What happens if you get sand/dust in your eyes while you're running? Will
there be clean places with sanitary running water for you to insert and remove
them? I don't wear my lenses when I'm doing yard work -- something always
seems to get into one of my eyes and it's way easier to deal with without my
lenses.
How about prescription polarized swim-goggle-like things? Are those any
cheaper?

A footrace in the Sahara in summer sounds like real punishment. Good luck
whatever you decide to do, and at the very least PLEASE report back when it's
over.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm on the week trial now with standard lenses. The astigmatism is
slightly worse in the right eye and I was told to expect some ghosting
with the normal l Focus Dailies. For running etc it's not a problem,
although it is much more noticeable indoors (slightly blurred at times)
and definitely tricky when reading and working on the laptop.
I had a squint in my left eye and although it was corrected with an op
and a patch for a few years I still apparently tend to only use this
eye for peripheral vision (and as a "backup"..!), so the solution
appears to be a toric for the right eye, and the cheaper standard lense
for the left.
Not a bad compromise! I will get the torics next week.
The race is in September in central Egypt (temp is going to be around
45-50...). Great idea about the RX swimming goggles, but hopefully the
wind will keep down.
I can finally buy a decent pair of sun specs!! Opted for the Maui Jim
Kapaluas, nice polarised lenses and should also help keep the sand out
if it kicks off.
