Hello,

I just want to know exactly what does 20/20 vision actually mean?

I am -5.00 in both eyes with an astigmatism in my right eye also.
I wear either glasses or contact lenses to correct this.

I can see the 2nd line from the bottom of the eyechart with both eyes
together,
With my right I can see the 4th from the bottom clearly, and with the left I
can make out a few letters of the bottom line, although the letters are
very small.
So what scale would that make me?

It's defined as the line where you miss less than half. _Not_ where you can
"see easily."

Dear Jayne,

20/20 means that you can read
0.9 size letters at 6 meters.

Not exactly. It means you can _guess_ more than _half_ correctly at that
size and distance.

Dear Jayne,

Please disregard Otis's postings.  He is not in the medical profession and
not in any position to give medical opinions.

Thank you!

Dear Jane,

The standard of reading 5 minute-of-angle letters
at 20 feet was established by Dr. Snellen
ca 1865.

Allen would have you believe that it takes
a MD or OD to tell you this.

He assumes you don't have the
intelligence or judgment to understand
basic scientific facts.

I think he is an optometrist -- he gives
a lot of "mentality" suggesting that
possibility.

Learn to think for yourself.

Otis

Hmmm Otis,

Can you answer this direct question since I am sure any optometrist lurking
in this group is just as curious???

How does an Optometrist think since you think I have that mentality?

It's a very simple question Otis, and I am asking for a very simple answer.

Per usual, I bet you don't answer with a direct answer.

P.S.  Google is your friend pal, look me up and you will find what I told
you what I am not.  It only took me 90 seconds to find the several posting.

Allen,

You are not worth 90 seconds -- given you inane
commentary to Little Pussy Cat.

Your remarks are condensending to her.

I dunno, Otis.  I think he did the OP a favor.

In fact, anybody that warns the unsuspecting of your lack of
qualifications (I don't mean credentials.  I mean qualifications) does
a public good.

I doubt that.  It's pretty likely that Allen will just tell people *to
ignore you*.

Now that's sound medical advice.

BTW, Otis: I don't recall seeing typing/spelling as poor as yours in
years.  Are you *sure* that you don't need a real eye exam?

How about being able to resolve two lines being at 1 min angle apart.

To easy Philip, an astigmatic might be able to resolve this in one direction
and fail in the other (90 degree)
This is just one of the reason characters with less guess possibilities are
handy (like the Landolth's)

In conclusion, I think that the "Otis therapy" should be destroyed

True, and thats the reason why some characters on the same line are missed,
while others are picked up easily.

Dear Little Pussy Cat,

Here is an eye chart to determine
help determine what line you
read on your eye chart in
terms of 20/15, 20/20, 20/40,
etc.

Please disregard Allen.  He is going
to tell you that you can't possibly
understand how to read and
eye chart.

Jeeze.

Best,

Otis
