My grandfather was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration in his right
eye. He went in to get checked because when using that eye, straight
lines look wavy to him. The doctor said he is 60% sure this is what he
has and for him to come back in two weeks for another check up.
For those of you experienced with this, is there anything we should be
doing now? He is 73, in good health, still works & drives every day,
doesn't smoke, eats a ton of fruits and vegetables. My grandmother
however does smoke and he lives with it every day. His other eye is
fine. We have read a thing or two about taking certain multivitamins
to reverse the process, but we aren't sure about that.
I think his #1 fear in life is vision loss, so any advice any of you
can offer will be greatly appreciated. We are in the Houston, TX area.

Dear Friend,

That MIGHT be Macular Degeneration, but it also MIGHT be
an incipent detached retina.
I would suggest taking your grandfather to a retinal surgeon
for an exaustive check of the retina. Do not delay on this
one.
Perhaps Dr. Robins will review this for you.

It "might" be many things. How is that helpful?
Perhaps you could suggest some conditions that actually match the
symptoms...

No, please don't. The grandfather is under the care of a doctor, and
doesn't need advice from Otis. The OP asked for advice from PEOPLE WHO
ACTUALLY HAVE MACULAR DEGENERATION. The diagnosis has been made by a
doctor, and the question is what other people have done about this
condition, not what the diagnosis is.

MT was being sarcastic in that otis was suggesting a nearly impossible
diagnosis based on the history. But the original post said 60%
certainty meaning the Dx is still open to a degree. The patient should
be seen by a retinologist for a definitive diagnosis, and yes, the "eye
vitamins" seem to help many cases (extra copper, zinc, beta-carotene and
maybe leutein).

Why would leutein be in the "maybe" class?

I don't think it was part of the Preser study, and I haven't personally
read any of the studies on leutein, so I'm just speaking for myself.

Nutritional supplements may, at best, slow down the progression of macular
degeneration.
It wouldn't hurt to wear Fitovers or Cocoons, two brands of sunglasses that can
be worn over eyeglasses. The lens color must be amber.
