Question about prolonged fogginess after cataract surgery

Hello,

My father, age 68, had cataract removal surgery about ten days ago.
(The official name of the procedure was 'cataract removal and
implantanion of intraocular lens'.)  Since then, the vision in the
operated eye improved somewhat for a while, but never quite recovered
and now now even seems to have regressed.  Specifically, he definitely
sees more clearly now--but not all the time.  For about 4-5 hours after
he gets up in the morning, the vision in the affected eye appears as if
through thick fog.  It eventually mostly clears up as the day goes on,
but then the fog reappears again the following morning.  While I
understand that it's supposed to take about two weeks for the vision to
recover, it seems that there has been insufficient progress, given the
amount of time that has already passed.  And, of course, since in the
last couple of days the morning fog in the eye has gotten even thicker,
I'm wondering whether or not things are really progressing as they
should be.

My father has, of course, seen his doctor as a post-op visit in the
next day or two after the surgery, and at the time everything appeared
normal.  He is now taking the various eye drops that have been
prescribed; the eye is looking very slightly, but not too red...

Can anyone share a personal or professional experience with similar
symptoms and give me an idea about whether this is to be expected and
we should just give it more time, or whether there's cause for concern?

Thank you in advance,

Alex

I can tell you one thing.  Make sure he shakes that little bottle of
Pred Forte they gave him, every time he uses it.  I'm beginning to think
that people aren't telling patients this.  It is a suspension.  That
means if you drop it in your eye without shaking it, you're getting
nothing, NOTHING.  None of that great medication called STEROID that you
need right now.  And you need it bad.  Shake that damned bottle up and
tell your doc I'm sending him a bill for this advice.  This is beginning
to piss me off...

Thank you for the response.  Yes, before posting this I'd looked and
saw references to needing to shake that med and confirmed with my
father that he was doing it.  (He's actually the kind of guy who's
pretty careful following doctors' advice, so I believe him...)  He said
he got three different bottles of eye drops, two said 'Shake' and one
'Shake well'.  I'll follow-up to make sure he's shaking the Pred one.

Thanks for the tip,

Alex

What is the surgeon's explanation? He must have one.

I assume it is corneal edema, which is usually worse after awakening (eye
closed all night, fluid can leave the edematous cornea) and better later on
due to surface evaporation.

Surgeon's job is to explain.

Hi David,

Yes, you're right, and my father is getting another appointment with
his surgeon.  The sudden worsening happened yesterday (Saturday)
morning, so he coudln't get one right away.  I wanted to see, from
other people's experience, if his condition was common.

Thank you for your response,

Alex
