Hey, all.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a note concerning irritation I found one
night after having used day/night contacts for the first time. All was
well until the 4th night - I woke up and felt like sand had been poured
in my eye.

Anyway - a few potential diagnoses were suggested, included CES.

On the sage advice of the group members, I stopped wearing the lenses
at night.

For a week, anyway. I decided to be brave and try again, but with the
addition of a single drop of Visine before bed and on waking up.

That is now my routine: one drop in the morning to kick-start the
lubrication, and one drop before bed. It's been 6 nights in a row, and
no problem.

So: I've heard that Visine isn't the best for this kind of application:
Should I be using a pure saline solution? Is it true that Visine can
work against me, by reducing the amount of tears my eyes produce
normally? I'd hope that one drop in the morning and one at night would
not be significant, but who knows...

Any wisdom would be appreciated!

Cheers,

DW.

Ordinary Visine (tetrahydrozyline) is a direct-acting stimulant that reduces
the diameter of small blood vessels (takes the red out).

It makes your eyes _look_ better, but it decreases tear flow. Consequently
it decreases CL comfort and increases the chance of abrasion and

Stick to lubricants labeled for use with soft contacts. There's a "Visine
For Contacts" version with lubricants and without BAK, a caustic
preservative.

That's actually what I have been using;

I was also looking at the ThereTears line; the 'gel' would seem to me
to be an option for nighttime.

But hey - if the Visine for Contacts is okay, I'll stick with it
because it seems to work fine.

Thanks!

How long do preservative-free eye drops last after an individual bottle
bottle  has been opened? I know one is supposed to toss the remainder
after the first use. But how long is it safe *really*?

Background: I've been using Genteal Gel for dry eye overnight. It is
currently on back order from the manufacturer until lord knows when.
I've been trying different drops and found that Refresh Endura, seems
to work almost as well. Can I safely use the same individual bottle 2-3
nights in a row. I need it every night, so it isn't going to sit around
for weeks after opening or anything like that.

Thanks!

Here's some rock-solid, uninformed, anecdotal information for you:

If I open a preservative free dropper:

- I'll use it for 24 hours if left at room temperature

- I'll use it for up to a week if refrigerated (provided, of course,
that the patient information insert indicates it's ok to store in
temp's that cold

That info is worth just about exactly what you paid for it ;-)

Best,
Neil
