HI .. I am in my 70s and got one major shock 4 months ago. My
ophthalmologist told me I had AMD. Went home and read all I could online
:) .. went back ,asked him if it was the dry or wet kind..he said dry:)
that I didn't' have it in the other eye but he could be a little duesen
(sp) and not enough for AMD. He also had a photo taken of the retinas in
both eyes..and I go back in 2 months. I'd imagine that this is to see
how fast it is progressing. I did that 'Ainsler Grid' online ..and find
that the AMD eye now is seeing the lines on the grid as wavy:( ( I
thought just 'wet' AMD did that ? ..but anyhow, it was shocking to me to
have something tangible I could 'see' that proved I had a problem.
sorry to be so long winded but knowledge is power and I know nothing
about this.
Does anyone know ..if the Lutein I hear about is worth getting and
taking ? are there any special eye drops or meds that might be able to
help or slow progress down ...I know the DARK greens (spinach) would
help ?
All comments, suggestions, 'words of wisdom' are
MOST welcome !
THANK YOU

I'd take an "eye" type multi-vitamin, one that contains extra dosage of
zinc, copper and beta-carotene. This is the mix that was studied by
Baush & Lomb and found helpful. B&L even markets their own brand of the
original mix they studied under the name "Presser".
I don't think leutein was studied by B & L, but I know some people claim
it helps. I think you can't eat enough spinach to get the therapeutic
hit you get from the vit. tabs. but it doesn't hurt and in general, the
darker the color the better.
If your doc took the pics using a camera that generates .jpg files, ask
him to e-mail you copies, and if you don't have a way to put them on a
web site, I could help you do it so everyone could actually see your
maculas...

If you see wavy lines now you should call the ophthalmologist right away and tell him. You should have received an Amsler grid test in his office (did you?). And you should be on an ARED's vitamin diet (which includes luthein -- he should have prescribed same - did he?) . The ARED's intake has a profound effect in inhibiting (according to the doctors at UCIrvine). And you should be wearing blue blocker sun glasses outside.
Good luck with all of this.

hate to be so ignorant..but why should I call the Ophtha. so
quickly..after noticing that I saw uneven and a little wavy on some of
the lines on the Amsler grid? I have an appt in 2 months anyhow.. since
my AMD is 'dry' now ..(I THOUGHT) ..or do the wavy lines maybe mean that
the 'dry' has turned 'wet' ..IN a month? and no ..I didn't do the Amsler
in his office ..but I had done it before online with the helpful 'eye'
URLs . and he said 'DRY' for sure .... hmmmmmmmmm ....
thank you for ANY help .. knowledge is power !

Anita,
You should call now because it is a symptom that I believe he is unaware of.
