HI .. I am in my 70s and got one major shock 4 months ago. My
ophthalmologist told me I had AMD. Went home and read all I could online
:) .. went back ,asked him if it was the dry or wet kind..he said dry:)
that I didn't' have it in the other eye but he could be a little duesen
(sp) and not enough for AMD. He also had a photo taken of the retinas in
both eyes..and I go back in 2 months. I'd imagine that this is to see
how fast it is progressing. I did that 'Ainsler Grid' online ..and find
that the AMD eye now is seeing the lines on the grid as wavy:(  ( I
thought just 'wet' AMD did that ? ..but anyhow, it was shocking to me to
have something tangible I could 'see' that proved I had a problem.
sorry to be so long winded but knowledge is power and I know nothing
about this.
Does anyone know ..if the Lutein I hear about is worth getting and
taking ? are there any special eye drops or meds that might be able to
help or slow progress down ...I know the DARK greens (spinach) would
help ?
All comments, suggestions, 'words of wisdom' are
MOST welcome !

I work for the leading global lutein producer. April '04 research
published in the Journal of the American Optometric Association found
that of 90 older men with dry AMD (not severe or advanced progression),
those taking 10 mg of purified lutein each day saw some improvement in
visual function. Some saw dramatic improvement. This is not a
definitive study: it was a small sample and relatively short term (one
year). However, it did give indications that lutein intake -- through
spinach or supplements -- may be beneficial. Many other studies have
suggested a reduction of risk of AMD with daily lutein intake.

The lutein ingredient branded under the FloraGLO trade name is
contained in many brands of supplements available at mass merchants,
pharmacies and specialty health stores. It's the lutein identical to
that in spinach and other dark green vegetables. Two large bowls of
fresh spinach a day will also get you somewhere around 10 to 12 mg of
lutein. Be sure to read label dosage so that you are getting at least
10 mg per day. 10 to 20 mg a day has been viewed as safe to date.

Other info resources:  Macular Degeneration Partnership (www.amd.org)
or AMD Alliance international (www.amdalliance.org).

Hope you can tell us how things work out.
