At times I see a patch of vision that is flickering, mainly in the left
eye but occasionally in the right as well. It is most pronounced when I
enter a warm building after being in the cold for awhile. It is only
with a specific area with clearly defined borders which seems to be more
or less stable in size. I can see through this flicker - which is
easiest to discern when looking at a solid, uni-colored surface such as
a wall.
I asked the eye doctor about it once (not an eye tech, a real
opthamologist) and he kind of blew off my question.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Dear "Errata",
I hope this ophthalmologist did a complete retinal exam.
Any "flickering" or "point lights" that come and go can indicate an
incipient detached retina.
If he checked this out -- and explained this to you -- then you are
probably O.K.

(I had the same thing -- that is the basis of my suggestion.)

The key is, how long does the flickering last for? If just a few seconds,
then Otis is on the right track (for once). If it lasts 10-40 minutes or so,
then Robert is on the right track. Your description sounds more like
ophthalmic migraine to me. If this is the case, you are at *slightly* higer
risk of normal-tension glaucoma - but if you've been checked by an eye
doctor, there's probably not a lot more you need to worry about. There's no
treatment as such.

Usually 5 minutes or so, hard to tell because once I'm not looking at a
wall then I no longer see it.

Dear Misc Errata,
It is always hard to describe these visual experiences.
If you are myopic, the probablity of developing a
detached retina is much higher -- something to consider.
I saw "point lights" flickering -- when I went indoors
and looked at blank walls.
The effect was more pronounced under mecury-vapor lamps.
The effect would go away after about 10 minutes.
You might wish to consider a "retinal" exam for
your peace of mind.
