unusual ocularist question

Not sure if this is the most appropriate group for my question, but I
couldn't find any others that seemed to fit the bill.

Apologies in advance if I've got the wrong group.

Now on to the question...

While listening to the radio yesterday I heard a story on NPR talking
about "medical tourism", or the increasingly common practice of
travelling to seek cheaper medical care in other countries.

It got me thinking. My health-insurance does not cover any portion of
the cost of replacing an ocular prosthetic, and I really can't afford a
new one right now. The current prosthetic is over 6 years old and has
become very uncomfortable. Polishing does little to help at this point,
and I have to deal with nearly constant discharge. Perhaps this is an
option I should look into.

I live in Southern CA, so Mexico is reasonably close. Would I be crazy
to consider seeking an ocularist south of the border to make a new
prostheses? If I did so would I be likely to save a significant amount
(once travel costs are factored in) over having it made domestically?

How would I go about finding a skilled ocularist a reasonable distance
from SoCal?

Google has been of little help. Though I did locate one ocularist in
Mexico City who is certified by the American Society of Ocularists, for
whatever that's worth...

TIA

Trevor,
I don't know anything about ocularists in Mexico.  However I
wanted to suggest you contact your local Lion's Club for assistance in
paying for your prosthesis.  They were a huge help to us several years
ago when my son had his first scleral shell made.  Other groups like
the Kiwanis' may also help.
