It doesn't actually happen _in_ the eyes. Sometimes it's a problem with one
or more of the muscles that move the eyes together, but usually it's a
problem in the nerves that control those muscles. Not "in" the eyes but
"behind" them.

NOW THIS MASTER IDIOT OF MR. TYRNER COMES TO REALIZE THAT THE EYES HAVE
NOTHING TO DO WITH VISION BUT ALL HAPPENS IN THE BRAIN, IN THE MIND.

MY SHEER COMPLIMENTS.

If this has just happened to you recently then you definitely need to
get it checked out.

If you were just curious, well that's OK then!!

I've had some personal experience with this.  In my case, seeing double
was a failure of my brain to merge the images coming from my two eyes.  My
OMD had predicted that this would happen if I tried using glasses after my
first cataract surgery.  Sure enough, I got some glasses, and had very
severe double vision.  My brain eventually learned to mostly ignore the
vision from one eye.  Fortunately I was able to wear contacts, so I wore
them 7 days a week for 14 hours a day, for five years, when I had my
second cataract surgery.  Glasses for severe myopia reduce the image size
considerably.  After my first cataract surgery, I needed no correction for
distance in my right eye, but -10D in the left.  The image from my right
eye was so much larger than the image from my left eye, that my brain
thought my two eyes were looking at different images, and so refused to
merge them.

My dad develop double vision about 4 weeks ago, previously he had
problems with weight loss (6month ago), family physician could not find
where was problem, only know when he had complains about double vision,
doctor did CT scan and thyroid test. Results was - on CT scan they
found one eye's lower muscle inflamed, and thyroid test showed over
active thyroid producing too many hormones. Try more web search for
Graves' ophthalmopathy.

Maybe somebody has more advice about this problem.

Right now has been 2 weeks my dad is on the THIAMAZOLE (TAPAZOLE). No
affect on double vision yet.
Is anybody can give some advice about this, is double vision will go
away?, and is any other medication may help?, any glasses he could
wear?.
He has hard time know, he used to like read a lot, can not go to work
right know, good thing he stopped smoking.
He has no double vision when he looks down. He has Binocular vision
(the double vision stops if either eye is covered.)
My dad is 64 years old.
Thanks for any advice

Diplopia from Graves thryroid-associated orbitopathy has little to do with
how much thyroid or how it is controlled. Some have no discernable thyroid
malfunction (not to be confused with "wardrobe malfunction ...").

That siad, the inferior rectus muscle enlargement will run its won course
over some months, and may cause contracture and therefore depression of the
eye (eye looks down on its own). To some extent, high dose oral steroids may
reduce the swelling somewhat, but many are not affected by the steroids.
Radiation has little longterm influence on this either. Both these
treatments are used when the muscle enlargement encroaches on the optic
nerve, causing deceased vision and risk of permanent vision injury.

Once the double vision stabilizes, and remains stable for at least 6 months,
muscle surgery may be done to realign the eyes straight ahead, and in
reading position, but does not fix the permanent muscle stiffness.

Imperfect imagination due to mental strain to see better.
