I recently went in for my annual dilated checkup. They had just gotten
in the equipment to do an Optomap Retinal Exam (
http://www.optos.com/ ) and suggested that I have this done in lieu of
the dilated exam. It cost $40 extra, as my medical/vision insurance did
not pay for it. It took about 2 minutes to have both eyes done. They
did say that a dilated exam might be needed as well in a small amount
of patients. The optometrist went over the details with me before my
refraction. It is digital, of course, and we viewed it on a PC screen.
It was quite interesting to see all the places that had been described
to me before like cobblestone, choroid freckle, shadow caused by
begining cataract. I like the idea of a permanent graphical record and
it was nice to see well (undilated) when I left. Has anybody here had
it done? What do the optometrists here think about it? Is this akin to
the dental videos that the dentists use - not needed by the dentist but
useful to sell more fillings, repairs etc. to the patient?

yes, I've had that done at my ophtholmologist's office for the past few
years. He charges me $35 for each exam. It is a lot better than having
yoyur pupils dilated. He doesn't do it though - his assistant does it.
