Thanks Dr Judy,
as far as my prescription for glasses is concerned, I can't remember
exactly what it was previously - though, if I remember rightly, it
appeared to be very similar to my contact lenses. I remember the
optician at my latest test showing me the old prescription, and the
new one, and noticing the difference, but what it was exactly I can't
remember. As far as the Astigmatism is concerned, I think it can be
safe to say that it has probably got worse, as i didn't notice much of
a problem with my contacts in the past - it's only recently that I
have noticed how bad my eyesight has become.
To answer another question - yes, I did ask and enquire about what
could be done, but the level of service I recieved was very low. As
soon as I said that I only wanted an eye test, and not to purchase a
pair of specs there and then, the optician didn't appear to be too
concerned with me, and couldn't get away fast enough to deal with
someone else who might part with their cash. I don't know who work
for, but at both my most recent, and next to recent eye tests, the
level of service Specsaver have provided me has not been up to
scratch.
The whole reason why I started this thread was so that I could arm
myself with all the facts before I go and discuss this with another
optometrist. With Specsaver, I was told I could try this, or I could
try that, but very little time was spent discussing the subject, as my
problem was more or less dismissed...
Anyway, thanks again.
but one final question. Would I be right in the assumption that you
can get yearly Toric lenses, and that, like the conventional yearly
soft lenses, I would get better vision from them, than daily
disposables? I'm sure some said earlier that you get better vision
from yearly disposables compared with dailies...

Any of yearly, quarterly, monthly or two weekly disposable toric would
provide better vision than daily disposables for two reasons. First, only
one daily disposable (Focus Toric) has a correction for astigmatism.
Second, Focus Toric Daily has a very limited range of astigmatism that it
can correct. The other torics have several astigmatism powers and a wide
range of astigmatism axis available and thus can correct virtually all
prescriptions.
Generally speaking, lenses that are replaced at least quarterly will stay
cleaner and thus deliver better vision than yearly replacement lenses.
Find an optometrist or optician who does a lot of contact lens work instead
of your current provider. BTW, if you tell the examiner that you only want
an eye test, the examiner is not going to do a toric contact lens work up.
You will need a contact lens fitting and will need several follow up
assessments after getting the lenses. Expect to pay for this. Your best
interests will be served by paying for a fitting and buying your of contact
lenses from that fitter.
