It's seeing the retina through the pupil, right? For some reason, my
daughter's children exhibit red-eye that seems to cover the entire iris
rather than just the pupil, while my son's kids eyes just have the red
spot in the pupil. It's a really creepy "children of the corn" look.
They think it's cool so I don't bother to fix it, but it's curious.

Wow.. sounds like iris transillumination, a feature of ocular albinism.
