Old and new packages of Acuvue-2

Hello,

I have been using lenses since 1998. So far, I only had Acuvue-2
lenses. When I had my first Acuvue-2, I thought they were monthly (it
was a mistake) and I used them for 1 month, sometimes more (about
40-45 days). I had absolutely no problems with them, my view was
perfect, no irritation.

My opth checked recently my eyes, and everything was perfect, as she
told me. I was running out of lenses, so I decided to buy new ones,
still Acuvue-2. My first surprise was that the packaging had changed:
I used to have only old boxes, with four lenses in each. The new
package has now 6 lenses in it.

However, since I have my new lenses, my eye feels irritated just a few
days after (8-10 days). Worse, I cannot wear them a whole day: I used
to wear lenses for something like 12-14h in a day (up to 16-18h,
without any problem), and now I cannot wear them more than 6-8h.

I checked up everything else, daily cleaning, lenses metrics... it
doesn't help. Apparently, the new lenses are exactly the sames as the
old ones.

Does anyone know if something has dramatically changed for Acuvue-2
lenses with the new packagings ?

Your email address suggests you're posting from France, so your experience
there may be different from ours in the US. I've had the Acuvue 2 in my
practice since mid-1999. I think they were available here before that, but
not much earlier - only 6 months or so.

In the US and Canada, Acuvue 2 (and the original Acuvue, released in the
early 90's?) have always come in boxes of 6. I've never seen them packaged 4
to a box.

If you aren't sleeping in them, some doctors here prescribe them as
one-month lenses, although that's "off-label," meaning beyond the wearing
schedule approved by our Food and Drug Administration. The Acuvue material
was originally packaged as a one-year lens called Vistamarc. It had a
terrible reputation for buildup and fragility compared to other "one-year"
lenses. It works great for 2 weeks, and sometimes OK for 1 month.

If I recall correctly, Acuvue 2 was released here in a new package, a
flatter box than the old (first) Acuvue, with smaller bubble-packs, but
still 6 to a box. Some of the very first lenses we got were in the larger,
more cubical box, but I think that was only the trial lenses, not for retail
sale.

In the US, Acuvue 2 comes in two shapes - a tighter 8.3 base curve and a
looser 8.7 base curve. People who need the 8.3 and suddenly switch to the
8.7 will experience the same symptoms you describe. Even though you said you
compared the "lens metrics" and found them identical, we have to wonder if
somehow you switched base curves. If your current lenses are 8.7, you'll
probably find the 8.3 much more comfortable. Vistakon says that the 8.3 fits
"most people."

I don't think the AV2 packaging has changed here since it was released.
Regardless, I've handled several thousand of them and never noticed the
change you describe.

You are right, I'm french. I may be wrong about 1998, as far as I can
remember I had A2 since 2000, beyond 2000, I'm not that sure.

Sorry, my mistake again, they were packaged in boxes of 6.

It seems to be the difference I was trying to mention. The old pack
was cubical, the new one is flat.

I'll try to see that tonight. Thanks for the answer.
