Retinitis Pigmentosa Tests Question ?

Hello:

Am 68 yrs of age, and recently had some peripheral field vision tests,
including a RGE test, and the results were quite poor.

Was told that it "might" indicate Retinitis Pigmentosa, but that there was
no way to know for sure without waiting another year, and re-doing the
test(s) to see if the peripheral vision has degenerated more.

This is "apparently" because I have had laser work on both eyes for
retinal tears, and the reduced field "may" be due to the laser work which
was mainly on the periphery.

Having to wait a year, somehow, doesn't sound correct.

Are there tests that can be done now, to determine if this condition exists
?

Might as well also ask, please:

Exactly what is Retinitis Pigmentosa ?
Significance of ?
Is it degenerative, treatable, etc. ?

Thanks,
Bob

Do you mean ERG?  This is a test of the response of the retina to light
stimulation.  It is abnormal in people with RP.

ERG is one the tests usually done.  Unfortunately, if there are other
retinal problems (like your laser treatment), they can affect the results of
the tests.  If the other problems are the cause of the abnormalities, then
the tests will be the same next year.  If RP is the cause, then, since RP is
progressive, one would expect the test results to be worse nest year.  So
you likely have to wait the year.

RP is an inheritied progressive degeneration of the pigment layer of the
retina which causes progressive vision loss. There are many different forms
with various degrees of progression and loss.  There is no treatment. See
the links below for more info
