Hi all,

My optometrist prescribed me this medicine for irritated red eyes to
use instead of a Visine or those alike.  Since I have mild dry eye he
told me Visine is not good.  Does anybody know about this medicine and
its uses? What I have found is that is very expensive drops.
Thanks in advance for the replies.

I use it. It is anti-inflammatory, used in a variety of situations to reduce
inflammation. In my case, it is for macular swelling following cataract
surgery. (Visine of course would do nothing for my condition.)

Late last week there was a discussion that I initiated concerning its
safety. It is considered reasonably safe, but in rare instances those using
it have developed corneal problems. Apparently in such cases the cornea is
likely to have been injured in some way before treatment with Voltaren
began.

Voltaren is an "NSAID", a non-steroid that suppresses inflammation, like
ibuprofen and aspirin. It works at least partially by blocking prostaglandins.

If your dry eye is inflammatory, perhaps the newest and most expensive treatment
is Restasis, an eyedrop form of cyclosporine. Acular is another alternative.

For inflammatory dry eye, it's also popular to try 2-4 grams of flax seed oil by
mouth every day for a couple of weeks. If it does any good, keep using it
because it has few side effects.

Visine only constricts blood vessels, making the redness clear up, but it has a
drying effect as well, and so do all the other decongestants (phenylephrine,
naphazoline, oxymetazoline.)

I'd try a moderate viscosity preservative free artificial tear. Voltaren can
be helpful in certain cases of ocular discomfort; your description sounds
like an artificial tear would be the better choice.

Thanks for all the replies,

I forgot to mention that I had an inflamated pterigyum on one of my
eyes besides the dry red eyes on both, and also starting to wear the
Corneal Refractive Therapy(CRT) lenses while I sleep.  I used
yesterday the Voltaren (1 time, 1 drop on each eye) and the condition
improved a lot even today(the day after).  As a note I am frequently
using the Refresh tears during the day and although it does its job of
lubricating, it wasn't working with inflamation and very red eyes(now
they are a little red).  I was prescribed to use the Voltaren twice a
day but I will use it once for the following days.
