Just had a phone call from the hospital to confirm they have a bed for
me tomorrow. So I have to turn up there at 7:30 tomorrow morning. By
this time tomorrow I should have a new knee!

Dave, don't try running on that new knee too soon!!  So glad you're all set
and pray for a very successful surgery, and a short, very good recovery.

All the very best for tomorrow Dave.

Remember - you can't run before you can walk, you won't sleep well again for
weeks, do as you're told even if it hurts a bit!

It was three weeks yesterday since my knee replacement, and last night was
the first night I managed to stay in bed for a whole 6 hours!  I didn't
sleep all that time, but hey, I managed to stay there!

I'm walking without sticks now (indoors) and even tried a few hours at work
yesterday.

I will be thinking of you.

Piggy backing here to wish you good luck Dave.

My brother who had his op. same day as you Jayne did not get out of
hospital until yesterday.  That was due to other complications not his
knee.

I have not been round to see him since he came out but my son has. My
son said he looked really ill. My brother says he will not go in to have
the other knee done.
I will probably see him in the morning and get the whole story.
It has been a rough year for my brother, he had a quadruple bypass in
March. He needs some good vibes.
At least I can sympathise with him, having had a bypass myself and 6
stents in my heart.

So true and well said.....  Its like when a person gets a steroid shot in
their knee,,,, they think they should run up and down stairs because they
can.   They do not realize that they are driving the steroid out of the knee
where it is doing,,,, the good.

Tell us about how it goes and I know you are not going to feel like doing
too much.   After the rehab, I hope you do feel that way.

Well, I had the op. on 3rd October. 4 weeks on everything seems to be
going well. I'm hobbling round the house without sticks these days,
though when I go out I still use 2 for security.

My energy levels have improved a lot since I came home - I'd kill for a
decent night's sleep, though. The knee still wakes me up by hurting when
it's been in one position for a couple of hours, or when I move
awkwardly.

Still, things are improving and I'm trying not to push myself too much.

Cheers for now,

Dave

Hi Dave

The sleep thing really begins to get you down doesn't it?  Your leg does get
a bit uncomfortable when you lie in the same position for a couple of hours.
Glad you're managing in the house with no sticks - I was like that, using
sticks outside mainly for confidence.  I have given them up now, and am
managing okay.  No pain in my knee, just soreness in the scar still, which I
wish would go away.

Like my left knee, I am at the stage where the new joint is "clunking",
which I thought was highly abnormal last time, but it turns out it is
common.  It doesn't hurt, but once the initial swelling went down after the
op, the joint "clunks" when I walk - its just a bit disconcerting, and I
don't know why but I think its unpleasant!  Last time, it went away by
itself after a couple of  months, and doesn't do it at all now.

Is your knee giving way on you at all?  Mine was, when I gave up the sticks.
I found that mainly in the evening, when I was tired, I'd start walking and
it would just give way most alarmingly (as if my leg just suddenly became
weak and pathetic).  It has almost stopped now, but has given me a couple of
"moments" this week.

If it is any consolation, at 6 weeks I felt desperate - sick and tired of
having to get up for a little walk in the night, fed up with not sleeping
for longer than two hours at a time (if I was lucky).  It was 7 weeks since
my operation on Monday of this week, and yesterday I realised that my sleep
has suddenly been getting better - I am getting quite decent stretches now.
I still wake up a bit in the night, but its just a moan and turn-over job,
rather than a sleepless hour when I have to get up.  My energy levels are
improving as a consequence.  Just as well as I am back at work 5 days a week
now (although perhaps that is why I'm sleeping better?)

I had my 6 week follow up appointment on Thursday, and they are quite happy
with me - I'll get an appointment in a year's time for x-ray and physio
assessment to make sure everything's okay.

I hope your progress continues Dave.

That's consoling - my knee clicks (or clunks, if you like) every time I
use it. I'm hoping this goes away, as it feels quite uncomfortable. But
if it went away for you then I hope I'll have the same experience.

> Is your knee giving way on you at all?

Now this is something that hasn't happened, yet. But the knee is still a
little swollen at the moment, and it feels as though there is a heavy
brace round it. The knee also feels very 'heavy' too.

Sounds familiar.

Sounds hopeful. I work from home, for myself, so I haven't totally
stopped since I came back from hospital - just been doing as much as I
could. Some days that's precious little, but I seem to be managing to do
more each day.

Thanks for that - and I hope the same for you.

Well my first knee was quiet in the couple of weeks immediately after the
op, then when the initial swelling began to go down, started clunking a bit.
However, once all the muscles and ligaments etc all tightened up nicely and
got back to fitness (about 3 months I think) it stopped and hasn't done it
since, so let's both cross fingers!

It feels awful at first doesn't it?  Like a lead leg!  It does go, but some
swelling stays for a long time.  If you read about it on the net, it can
take up to a year for all of the swelling to go.  I know I bought a pair of
boots (calf length) about 10 months after my left knee, and the left leg was
tight.  When I measured both calves the left one was an inch bigger.  It was
okay the next winter though!

Keep up the good work!

I had the same problem following my hip replacement.  It hurt only while
lying in bed at night.

Finally took to sleeping erect in a chair in the living room for 7 or 8
weeks and managed 6 to 8 hours sleep.

The cat whose chair I took over was happy when I returned to the bedroom.
