Having seen an orthopaedic surgeon for my osteoarthritis, and following
an x-ray, he has said that I should consider having both my knees
replaced. I wish to make an informed decision as to whether to ask for
the replacements to be done at the same time or some months apart.  I
am male, 63 years of age.

What are your views as to the pros and cons?

I would especially value the opinions of readers who have had both
knees replaced during the same operation.

Thank you in anticipation.

I haven't had this op done but  if I had the choice I would go for
both at same time. In the long run less recovery time less pain but
determination on your part to make yourself do all the physio. Bearing
in mind our health service is trying to save money you may get one
done and then find a long long wait putting undue strain on the
repaired one. This has happened to somebody I know.

Temprance -
Thank you for your reply.
The long wait would not apply as I have health insurance to cover the
operations (and I therefore won't be a drain on the NHS either!)
My question relates to the risks involved.  My research on the Internet
has shown that complications (especially in such things as DVT and
cardiovascular problems) are more than doubly likely by having the
bilateral.  This has more or less made my mind up to have the knees
replaced one at a time.  Am I right?  Or should I ignore all this in
order to get (hopefully) a one hit "cure"?
Would love to hear the experiences of someone who has had both knees
replaced during the same operation and any extra problems incurred.
