Our son as swollen and painful knees and ankles for the last 4 weeks. It as
been diagnosed as restrictive arthritus. He is in a great deal of pain and
find it very hard to walk any great distance. He has had steroid injections
in both knees.
Does anyone know the prognisis for this ailment.
Has anybody any suggestions how to ease the pain. My wife saw Tens machines
advertised at the local chemist are these any good. All suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Hi Terry, sorry to hear about your son, do you mean reactive arthritis?
I have the rheumatoid variety but there will be someone along soon who knows
about your son's condition. You didn't mention your son's age, but there are
loads of drugs and treatments they can try him on.The steroid injections
sometimes take a while to kick in, and I hope your consultant has prescribed
some pain killers for him.
Personally I don't set much store by Tens machines, at least try to loan one
from your surgery before you lay any money out on one.
Good luck, stick around there are some very knowledgeable people here
Best wishes to your son

Hi,
I have rheumatoid arthritis, and have used TENS for many years with varying
success on different body parts. If you can, borrow one from your GP or
local physio unit to try out first, although they are now a fraction of
their original cost.
Your son will need to try out different placings of the electrodes,
different modulation and pulse rates (you'll figure this out once you see a
TENS unit) to find which is most effective. However, it doesn't work for
everyone, and with varying success, hence the try-before-you-buy caveat.
Boots the chemist have a rather good one for around £30, but I would beware
of the cheaper ones, which often only have limited rate/modulation
controls. Also, if you do get one, don't trust the self-adhesive electrodes
to stay put, I usually find that a bit of Micropore tape is required to
anchor them securely.

Lloydspharmacy currently sell a TENS machine (Solpadeine branded!)
reduced from the RRP of £39.99 to just a tenner; 8 intensity levels and
6 different pulse types, plus 2 pre-set cycles. Seems to help my knee a
little, and gave my wife's back some relief for a short while. Nothing
to lose at that price.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Terry
Do you mean reactive arthritis by any chance? The Arthritis Research
Campaign have an info leaflet on it here:
http://www.arc.org.uk/about_arth/booklets/6034/6034.htm
I used a TENS machine before I had my knee replacement and got on quite well
with it.
