I'll try doing a "Bill Oddey" if I have a spare hour, probably
tomorrow.
PS: Wow -ooooow - Alison's a Webmaster/istress/person thingy, like the
dog and cat sites.

Well what can I say.
It's like a watched pot that never boils..
I usually get a variety of birds in my garden from crows to wood
pigeons, blackbirds, starlings blue tits finches even sea gulls.
I've just sat down between 12:30 and 1:30pm after filling the bird
table with wild bird food and breaking up a crust of bread and watched
and noted all bird activity in my garden!
Result = 1 X Blackbird
I didn't even bother to report it, I was so disappointed.
They'll all be there now, tucking into the grub, knowing I'm not
watching but on the net......... what can you do?

I noticed on the RSB web site that they give you the option of counting in
your garden or local park. I chose the park because there is a tidal river
flowing through it, and bordering it are fields and rough grazing. I was
thus able to report the presence of the normal garden type birds, plus
curlew, oyster catchers, redwing, rooks, magpies, common crows, swans and
mallard. Quite good selection I thought, and all genuine sightings. Last
year I reported from my garden and reported one herring gull.

Oh dear :o(
I must say, I think the time of day matters a lot - my birds seem to
flock in around breakfast time and later in the afternoon leaving
lunchtime a bit barren. I did my count a bit late (at 10:45) and i
managed a fairly decent count (including my resident Blackcap and
Goldcrest) but my frequent Bramblings didn't put in an appearance :o(
Not bd though for about 10x10m of estate back garden in Reading.

I got a better result this year at 8.30 am than I did last
year in the afternoon. I think
the fact that the weather was better this time helped.

Would you credit it ... since the bird count the Bramblings have come
back! Today they were flouncing around my back garden eating my seeds
and bread ... I could almost hear them singing "nah, nah, nah-nah
naaaah!"

is waiting for the pandas to come out .
