Jim - 10 Jan 2006 00:48 GMT Well, as promised by everyone, things have become better day by day, and tonight I walked a mile to the local shops to buy a 60W bulb. Two months ago walking a mile was not an option never mind doing it for such a trivial reason :-)
Still not getting a lot of sleep - 4/5 hours a night - but today was the great day on which I took off my sexy surgical anti-embolism stockings. Whew. Maybe I'll sleep better tonight, though somehow I doubt it. When does that get better, folks?
And so, according to my doctors, six weeks on I can now drive and have sex - but not have a bath*.
Oh very funny, doc. Very, very, very funny. These medics have a wicked sense of humour.
I mean after SIX WEEKS without a proper bath, who's going to want to get in a car with me? :-)
Cheers, Jim
*No, I don't have a walk-in shower... but I do have a very big sponge if there are any bored nurses out there... ?! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * For email, please take out the dog..

First night without the anti-embolic stocking, woke up after 4 hours as I have been since the op., then fell straight back to sleep till 7.30. Those stockings are *evil* :)

Well done Jim, you're doing really well and it's great to read of your progress. I'm not sure the sleeping will get any better. It certainly hasn't in my case cos I can never get comfortable in bed. And I can remember many baths, had in desperation with my leg hanging over the side. Just picture it - not a pretty sight:))) Splodge

Oh dear - have you tried different pillows, mattresses, whatever you can? I can't lie on my op. leg yet, but I use 3 pillows where I used to use 1-2 and find that I can sleep on my back okay. I've even cheated ('cos it's a BAD thing) and used a pillow to support my op leg for a few moments lying on my non-op leg. I hope that's not entirely stupid... I still think those anti-embolism stockings were causing me some problems. Not sure why...
Hope things get better! :)

I could never get the damn things on or off without help. I bought a new bed in summer, and that took a lot of getting used to. Something that has helped is spraying lavender on my pillow, plus going from one pillow to two. Having two cats on the bed doesn't help either:))) Splodge

A mile's a good distance; how long did it take >you? Hi Alison - it was a walk to the shops, wander around to get the bulb and a walk home - it took about an hour. Not so impressive after all, huh? :-))
Still, it's not a race, but it didn't hurt, and I'm glad that I can now be fairly confident of getting to the main shopping centre, which is also where most of the important services are too - bookshops, barber and coffee shops (my idea of important! :-)
Cheers, Jim

Jayne - 11 Jan 2006 21:51 GMT Hi Jim
Sleep was just the very very worst thing for me - it was about 8 weeks before I slept properly with my knee. (Seems like a distant memory now!). I was lucky though, as was pointed out by Janet - I didn't get to wear the lovely stockings!

Sadly I have just had to cancel an arthroscopy on my right knee, as John is away and I have no transport on the 8th Feb :((
I didn't realise that as far as red tape is concerned, this means technically I've refused the op, and have to go back to the bottom of the waiting list, so it could be 3-4 months I have to wait again. They will look at that and then decide if the right knee is partial or full replacement.
I haven't told them yet about my hip........

I suppose it's not just a matter of getting you there, but you need someone to stay in your house because of the anaesthetic - is that right?
And is that a possible hip replacement in the future? Are you trying to compete with me? lol Splodge
Jayne - 12 Jan 2006 20:59 GMT > That's bad news Jayne. I suppose it's not just a matter of getting you > there, but you need someone to stay in your house because of the [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > compete with me? lol > Splodge I hadn't considered that someone might have to be there (apart from the kids) - it was more that I have to be there for 8.00am and need a lift home. I'd ask a friend, but they all have school aged kids and getting there for 8.00 is impossible in those circumstances. I'm not too worried really - not in a hurry for it, as I don't have anywhere near the pain of having 2 bad knees. (One bad knee seems to be way less than 50% of the pain!)
Not sure about the hip really - it has ached on a couple of occasions, but not really painful, but I am having a bit of trouble raising my leg to step out of the bath/shower, and using a clutch seems to be a bit achey. Not mentioning it though yet (you never know, it might just go away! LOL).

Jayne - 12 Jan 2006 21:06 GMT I meant to add to that - you'll never guess what I picked up at Christmas from my 10 year old niece?
Head lice - again! What a struggle to get rid of them - its left my curly hair in tatters on the ends, and I am just desperate to make and appointment to have an inch cut off to rid myself of the raggy ends, but daren't until I am 100% sure that the critters are gone!

.... not any more! :-))
Seriously, best of luck with the critters - curly hair if probably worse, isn't it? It's along time since I let anyone school age into my home, and now you know why, don't you...!
Jim (whose head has started to itch from reading your post! Honestly!)

Jim - 12 Jan 2006 23:15 GMT >> Hi Jim >> [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >You wait until the next operation Jayne...........! >Splodge The strange thing that I have noticed in the last couple of days is that after getting rid of the sexy stockings and returning to good old M&S socks, my ankles are itching like mad if I keep my shoes on for more than a few hours. Weird - but survivable!
Oh, and slept fitfully until 8:30 this morning which is a record since November 28th and my operation! Seems to be getting better, thank goodness, though I can't lie on my op. side at all. More things improve from you too Splodge, though the 2 cats might be a clue - still, at least you can keep warm even if you are awake! :)

Jim - 11 Jan 2006 23:18 GMT No sexy stockings? That was lucky. One pair was just uncomfortable, but the other pair was trying to strangle me from the ankles up. I had to take them off in the end and use the first pair only. It was quite fun wearing them outside as people would occasional stare at my "white socks". Not my usual style to be honest...
If I'm as lucky as you, 8 weeks until a decent sleep doesn't sound too bad, as I'm just coming up to seven. Fingers crossed, legs not.
Cheers, Jim
