Anyone in her know someone who would like a free holiday?
I'm planning a trip to Britain in september, sailing from NYC to
Southampton and spending about 2 weeks visiting 3 or 4 places
ending up on the west coast of Scotland, and returning to catch the
boat back.
As my sight went off somewhere some years ago, it would be useful to
have an escort to find the right train, plane, hotel, pub and
the like during this tour.
I am prepared to pay fares, hotel accommodation, meals etc, and as I
don't need much attendance apart from the travelling bit, there would
be time off for said escort to wander off sightseeing or boozing or
something. So, it's a free holiday for someone in return for a bit of
assistance.
A driving license might be useful in case a rented car has to be
taken at any point.
If anyone inhere knows of someone who could take this on , e-mail me
at rocker5(at)flash.net
not the fake address in my header
and i'll take it from there.
I've tried the RNIB (not helpful) and am trying to contact
an organization in Bristol called tripscope, so far without
success. Anyone know if they are still in business?
BTW My Sig line gives my present location, but I am from Britain,
just for the record!
Thanks for any help in this.

Have you tried these?
http://www.dialuk.info/
I don't know how helpful they are, but they are contactable by email,
so you could post this to them and see if they can help here in the
UK.

DIAL? I believe I had two brief dealings with that outfit, some 20
years ago, both unsatisfactory. one was their
Derby office; I rang them with an inquiry about advice on some State benefit
to do with mobility costs or something, that I was after. Two men
appeared to answer the phone simultaneously or maybe it was a
phone with an external speaker, and a
hilarious 3-way conversation followed, with them unaccountably
instantly getting hold of the idea that I
was seeking one of these specially adapted small cars that the
wheelchair-bound use to get about, and they discussed this
excitedly between themselves like Tweedledum and Tweedledeein alice in
Wonderland.
When I finally managed to break into their crosstalk, with the
information that, with my eyesight in its present much reduced
condition a car was the last thing I needed,
one of them said in a horrified manner, but you shouldn't want to drive
a vehicle in that case! It would be highly dangerous. You might crash into
an oncoming car.
I told him with gritted dentures, that I didn't want to drive, I
just wanted some free loot from the government.
And the other buffoon, ignoring this, chipped in with a rambling statement
involving the combined velocity of two cars colliding head on. I hung up at
that point and left them to it!
My other contact was some years later with their Dorset office, but
I forget the details, except that as a result I was sufficiently annoyed by the
response to phone the Charity Commissioners office to ask if it were a suitable
organization to be classed as a charity.
Seem to remember they took it seriously too.

You will NOTE my first comment was "I don't know how helpful they are"
as in I haven't had any dealing with them myself.
My thought was they had a link to http://www.afbp.org/ as you seem to
have had no luck with rnib.
Any way good luck with your quest for the perfect escort, I'll not
bother to offer any further advise, you may have pissed on their
strawberries as well!

Hell, I wasn't putting your suggestion down - rather, the mentionof
the name DIAL dredged up a longforgotten memory of what was the most bizarre
phone call I ever experienced.
I did note the afbp.org bit, and am going to try their site when time
allows.
Stay cool

The traditional British way of doing these things is to post an
advertisement in The Lady magazine. Their web address is:
http://lady.co.uk
They do butlers, ladies' maids, that sort of thing.
