Hi there,
I have not written for a long time.  I have had RA for 2.5 years now.  I am
30 years old and I am coping with it a lot better than I did in the past.
However, I have been flaring badly now for over a week and I am starting to
feel really depressed.  Everything hurts and I know that my flat mood does
not help, but it is so hard to pull myself out of this rut.  I just want
some pain relief but nothing seems to help.

I guess I would just love to hear from anyone who understands.
Thanks, Suz

Hi Suzie,
Sorry to hear you're going through a bad patch, but I'm sure
it will pass. I get flares from time to time just try to
remember that it will ease eventually and not force myself
to do things that make me feel worse. Start doing things
that cheer you up while other people take a little more of
the daily load for a while. Watch telly (the more absorbing
and funnier the better), eat well, try to sleep, and (for
me) lots of reading and talking with friends 'cos those are
good for taking me out of my own head. I think you're
exactly right to say that our mood has a lot to do with how
we feel and vice versa. Get your own back on RA and do some
stuff to really cheer yourself up! (I'm told retail therapy
works, but I can't afford a new Ferrari... :)
Hope you feel better soon ...
Jim

Sorry to hear that you're in a downer at the minute Suzie, I imagine that
all of us reading have felt like that at sometime or another.  I can
remember days when all I did was lie on the couch thinking it would never
end.

What treatment do you have for your RA?

Thank you all for your kind words.  It did make me feel better to hear from
you all.  I am in Australia so feel a long way away from all of you in the
UK.  I am on Mtx 20mg, Remicade (8 weekly infusions), Prednisolone 5mg and
Celebrex 400mg.  I dont really take anything for pain as nothing seems to
work for me.  Nothing really seems to help the pain.  Just waiting it out I
guess.

Thanks again.  I am couch-ridden again today, but feel a little better
mentally.

Hi Suzie

my dh doesn't understand why I don't take painkillers - I just don't find
them very effective, at least the ones I've tried so far. I hope you will be
feeling better soon

Thanks Liz.  It is good to know that I am not the only one who they dont
work for - although I wish painkillers did help for people like us.

Ask your doctor if you can get on Tramal or Ultram (Tramadol
Hydrochloride 50 mg) tablets for the pain. It sure helps me, but it
may clash with your other meds.

I'm also in Oz in the West.

Did that to me first up. I took too big a dose (2x50mg caps).
As I'm also a Prostate Cancer patient, amongst other things, I
panicked when my urine stream got constricted. I phoned the Clinic and
they said take only 1 cap every 6 hrs and not to exceed 4 per day.
You would also need to check your body weight and you may need advice
from your doctor on dosage.

Just goes to show how drugs affect people differently.  I can take 2x50mg
tramadol and drive to work, function all day, come home and cook a meal,
with codeine in between.  I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, and I know
lots who are knocked out by tramadol, but I'm okay on it.

are these modified release tramadol, or the full whack ones?

they gave me the full whack when i was in hospital, but otherwise i've
not used them at all.  i've been told by my doctor to adjust my dose
as needed.  i had got it down to 2x50 in the morning 1x50 at night,
and then this winter came along.  i'm currently using 3+2, and codeine
only when i really can't cope otherwise.  (i'm still using celebrex,
and my dmard is azathioprine (sp?))

of course, i don't do this complicated "driving" stuff: i cycle to
work, which on the flat roads of cambridge is mostly pretty easy.

Full whack 50mg tramadol hydrochloride.  Don't get me wrong, I don't take
them every day, most days I just take codeine during the day and DF118 at
night.  When I sat down with my doctor and asked if, when I take the
tramadol on the worse days, do I drop the codeine, and he said no, but don't
take the full whack 60mg dose of codeine.  I only take the tramadol when it
gets horrible.  It suits me fine though (I have never had an adverse
reaction to a painkiller so I'm lucky) and takes the edge off.  Wish there
was a pill to take it away totally, and leave you clearheaded.

When i was in hospital a few years back, everyone swore by Tramadol. I
actually am prescribed Meptid (Meptazinol) and find these very good for the
pain. Once tried Tylex(?) Capsules but they gave me scary palpitations.
