Hi, my name's James and I've never posted to this group before - I never
knew any thing like this existed until today. I guess I should start by
telling you about myself.

I'm 22. I was diagnosed with RA in 1999, but the doctors didn't tell me that
I'd still have it 5 years later. I guess they hoped it would be temporary
and didn't like the prospect of telling me that it may be with me for years.
My brother had a once-off swelling in his knee and elbow (there's definately
a genetic link), was in hospital for a month, but it cleared up and never
bothered him since (lucky b******!!) but for some reason it just got worse
and worse in my case. Until recently I've quietly put up with it, kind of
ignoring it and hoping it will go away - it was the wrong thing to do
because I became quietly depressed without talking to anyone about it. I was
bottling up emotions until I exploded into tears one day. Thats when I
decided to come to terms with RA and see it as a challenge instead of a
curse, confront it and do something positive about it. I had no idea of all
the little things that can help which my rheumatologist never told me, until
I started reading about it: hot water bottles, relaxation techniques,
different medications, eating the right food, an electric blanket, massages,
exercises etc. But the most helpful thing I've found is just talking to
people about it - it helps so much. With all these little things I feel like
I can get on with my life - thats why I decided to give this posting stuff a
go.

I'm thinking about trying an RA diet - lots of oily fish, veg, fruit, less
red meat, fat, sugar - I've also heard that cheese can be an aggravator.
Does anyone else do a diet like this? Do you think it helps?

Thanks for reading my ramble.

Till next time,

James

Hi James, nice to meet you.  Its awful when you are first diagnosed - I
think a large percentage of people must go through that self pity, depressed
stage.  I certainly did, as it took a long while to get a diagnosis.

You can learn a lot of tips for coping from groups like this.  There has
been a discussion recently about diet.  I tried a few exclusion diets -
cutting wheat, cutting milk, cutting nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes,
peppers), but to be honest it made no difference to me.  What I find best is
a balanced healthy diet - as you suggested at the end of your post, now that
sounds like a good ideal for most people.

What treatment are you on for your RA?  I think that is the most important
thing - to get it under control, and if it isn't then to try another.

I hope you hang around.

Hi James,

If you like to chat about arthritis, you've come to the right place.
You could also try newsgroup "alt.support.arthritis" as between the 2
groups there's a fair amount of 20 somethings from around the world
with arthritis.

Just wanted to say hello, I'm Andy, I'm 44 and have had RA since 1998.

I have a diet link for you before I go aswell:

All for now

Cheers Andy - that idea about a pain diary / eating diary sounds like a good
idea, I think I'll give it a go. The question is - if I have a bad day,
should I be looking at what I ate yesterday, 2 days before, 3 days...? I
feel like Sherlock Holmes

Hi James,

A pain diary can be a good thing to start anyway. Nothing complex, but
even with a little detail in it you can take it along to your next
Rheumatologist [RD] visit, and it will help. Take a look here also:

http://www.arthritis.co.za/default.htm

Dr Doc is an online Rheumatologist, he's very helpful and has a
section on his site on how to get the most from your RD visit.

Good luck, and call back and tell us how you get on.
