Hi,
Can anyone tell me  about travel insurance (health costs) for travel to
and a short stay in  Holland from the UK?
I have lupus which is a form of arthritis  and APLS and am on a lot of
medication!
Do I need specialist insurance or what?
Thanks  !

I would think you will need travel insurance, but you must tell them about
your condition and the drugs you take, as they may put a clause in the
policy.  You'd need to shop around I think.

I have to agree with this. Usually they will increase the excess on your
travel ins policy, or will exclude anything to do with your condition -
it shouldn't increase the premium you have to pay for cover. If you
don't tell them, it could render the complete policy invalid.

A quick search on the net should be able to get the answers you need.

I have a psychiatric illness , arthritis and osteo and i took my insurance
out with Nationwide when i went to Florence for xmas and all they did was
exempt me with the illnesses and took my medication down but i also had E111
to just make sure i was covered. But it is worth looking around due to some
companies would like a dr's letter which increases the insurance costs.I am
going to Rome this Xmas and i will be using Nationwide again as before.

Hi,
I have got an application form for an E111, the guidance notes on the E111
do not say anything about preexisting medical conditions.
I have contacted my GPs office. The E111 gidance notes said contact your
GP for more info.
I was told when speaking to the GP reception "speak to the insurance
company about it". When I said it was a govenment scheme (E111) I was told
to "phone the number on the form". I can't find one!
I phoned Lupus UK and they said they didnt know but if I phoned some
insurance companies I would get some more info. I was then given some
insurance companies numbers.

To be frank I feel angry about this, I am only planning on going for a few
days in Ansterdam, why should I have to take out insurance when other
people don't?
I cannot postpone the trip (late May) due to partner being off work then.
Feel like not going abroad at all now!
I am waiting to hear back from NHS Direct. Hopefully they will tell me
something more specific.
Thanks for the info so far,
Lynne

Lynne - when I replied I was under the impression that you were referring to
travel insurance, not the E111 scheme.  I don't know much about the E111,
apart from the fact that I get one to go to Europe, but I believe it doesn't
cover all costs of treatment, and that you should also have insurance to
cover you.

Yes, Jayne is correct. You need an E111 (free!!!!!) which you need to
get stamped at a Post Office before you go - that covers any expenses
you incur while there, and you also need normal travel insurance. I only
found out recently that you should renew your E111 every 2 or 3 years.

The people who don't take out travel insurance take a huge risk. For
your own peace of mind, take out insurance and don't let this stop you
travelling abroad.

I don't expect the E111 will be free for much longer. It seems to have
escaped Gordon's net so far.........

Enjoy Amsterdam. I envy you your trip.

reasonable price of £14.00 which covers upto 7 days with Nationwide online,i
tried Tesco's online but it was costing me a fortune with all my illnesses.

Don't worry about me, Snake. I've got an annual policy. I ring them up
every year, pay the premium, tell 'em what operations I've had in the
last year, and what I'm on the waiting list for now, and then they send
me a letter telling me what the excess and/or exclusions are. Simple!

Hi,
Yes, it looks like I need the E111 and travel insurance.
I may not be able to organise it in time as we havent booked the trip yet,
partner is one of those "tomorrow people". We also have a window in June
so when he gets his finger out I will give a ring around the recommended
insurers.
