Has anyone found acupuncture helpful for arthritic pain - lower spine, neck,
knees and shoulders? I can no longer take meds due to kidney problems.
Thanks

Greta, send this to alt.support.arthritis.  I know some on there have used
accupuncture.

Hi Greta

I was in a bit of a bad way when I tried it, and whilst I don't think it did
anything for my knee pain, I wouldn't rule it out either.  I did find it
very relaxing, and also had a go at reflexology, which has to be the most
relaxing thing I've ever done (which is amazing as I normally can't bear my
feet to be touched!).

I would try it if I were you.

I can't imagine any situation where I'd consider acupuncture: dunno why, but
I just can't see why it'd work.  Woss reflexology then?

me neither, but i'm prepared to accept my mother's view that it does
her arth a lot of good.

structured foot-tickling.  ;-)

I'd better steer clear of that then.  Basically, if anyone tickles my feet
the only result will be a them-shaped hole in the nearest wall.

You know the theory that you can't tickle yourself because you know you're
going to do it etc?  Not even I can tickle my feet. Argh.  Shudder.  Cringe.

Its not foot tickling, you pair of clots!!  It is massage to specific areas
of the feet, which are supposed to correspond to specific areas of the body.

Now I am awful for not tolerating my feet being tickled (shamefully, I once
knocked one of my boys off the bed when they were babies because John
tweaked a toe), but this was different.  It was extremely relaxing and
wonderful.  Don't know if it did my arthritis any good however, but it did
make me feel good.

you say the nicest things.  i sit here making preposterous remarks,
and mostly people just ignore me.  :-(

(maybe it's because i'm not cliquish enough?  i manage it in other
groups... ;-)

i've never experienced it, actually.  i could do with something to
calm me down, or something.

let's hope the surgeon (not a bone man) who i'm seeing next week can
cheer me up a bit.  my hopes are simultaneously sky-high and sinking
into pessimism.

Oh I'm sorry Robin - I didn't mean it in a rude sense, more (Dame Edna mode
on) in a "loving, affectionate sense".

Its quite nice, surprisingly.  Mind you, not many people find having needles
stuck into them relaxing, but I did!  Especially the half hour spent
relaxing with about 30 needles stuck in various places, including between
the fingers and toes!!

Good luck with that - what are you hoping for from him?

nonono -- i was being deliberately clottish, and you recognised that.

recognition gives one a warm glow, i find.

just an assurance that the operation i'm waiting for hasn't been
indefinitely delayed by the embolism.  the previous person i spoke to
seemed to think it was.  :-(

[note: i'm deliberately not saying what the op is, so please don't
anyone ask.]

Glad there was no offence taken Robin.

I won't ask but I hope you get the result you wish for.

I used to have it for blood pressure problems and it well, worked a bit
but didn't last. Still I suppose if it could nudge your Arthur a bit
sideways as it were it would be welcome.

Doesn't hurt at all more tingles...

I had a friend whose wife was a trainee reflexologist. One evening
after a few drinks the cry went out for a volunteer and always game
for a try I stuck my hand up. My arthritic feet would have put-off the
more squeamish trainee but not her - she took it as a personal
challenge. Well, it all went very well and felt lovely - foot wash to
start then I think she used some oils and gave it a good, very
detailed massage in all the key areas - making lots of comments along
the way about "did you ever have this or that wrong...?", much of it
was quite incisive and she said she could sense a lot of my ailments
through the problems in my feet.

Anyway, it didn't help the arthritis much - but it made for a fun,
relaxing and interesting evening! :oD Oh, and she didn't tickle at all
- made a point of saying that was all part of her training.

I have a phobia, a terror of needles.  Having an injection or giving a
blood sample is horrible.  I was suprprised just how effective
acupuncture turned out to be for my arthritis of the neck.  My physio
talking me into having it, and for me it worked.  I would have it again,
yet I still hate and detest needles and blood tests.

They aren't like normal needles are they?  Very very fine things.

Oddly enough I don't automatically think of acupuncture needles in the same
way as hypodermics - is that weird?  See, one actually draws blood whereas
the other is just sort of jabbed in randomly*.  I don't have a probly with
needles but I most definitely do have a probly with seeing blood.  I have to
look away when they're sucking out the claret.  Grooooooooooooo......

Innards.  Ghastly.  I'm going to have all mine removed and replaced with
cybernetics.

AF

* yes I know but you could be forgiven for thinking it.  Bad elbow?  Let's
put a needle in your ear.  Sore feet?  The needle goes in your sister.

Ever heard "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvous;?..

Lyrics here;)...

ZZZZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM
Tooling down the hightway doing 79
I'm a twin pipe papa and I'm feelin fine
Hey man dig that was that a red stop sign
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
I'm just a solid mess of contusions
Never, never, never gonna speed again
Slip the blood to me, Bud

I jump in my rod about a quarter to nine
I gotta make a date with that chick of mine
I cross the centre line man you gotta make time-
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
Oh, man, I got the cotton pickin convolutions
Never, never, never gonna speed again
Shoot the juice to me, Bruce

My foot's on the throttle and it's made of lead
But I'm a fast ridding daddy with a real cool head
I'ma gonna pass a truck on the hill ahead-
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
My red corpsuckles (sic) are in mass confusion
Never, never, never gonna speed again
Pass the crimson to me, Jimson

I took a little drink and I'm feelin right
I can fly right over everything everything in sight
There's a slow poking cat I'm gonna pass him on the right
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
I'm a real gone paleface and that's no illusion
I'ma never never never gonna speed again
Pass the claret to me, Barrett

A rollin down the mountain on a rainy day
Oh, when you see me coming better start to pray
I'm a cuttin' up the road and I'm the boss all the way
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
Oh, doc, pardon me for this crazy intrusion
I'm never, never, never gonna speed again
Pump the fluid in me, Louie

I'm burning up the highway early this morn
I'm passing everybody oh nothing but corn
Man outa my way I don't drive with my horn
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
Transfusion, transfusion
Oh, nurse I'm gonna make a new resolution
I'm never, never, never gonna speed again
Put a gallon in me, Alan

Oh, barnyard drivers are found in two classes
Line crowding hogs and speeding jackasses
So remember to slow down today
Hey, daddy-o
A make that type O, huh
Atta-boy
[Scrreeech-BANG, tinkle]
