Has anyone tried the Herb "Valerian Root" for relief of occasional
sleeplessness.  Does it work?  Were there any side effects?  I came across
this one day when doing a web search, listed as an alternative for ambien.
(It's amazing how many on-line pharmacies now dispense ambien).

I know of a couple of people who have tried Valerian Root.  I, personally,
would not use it OR Ginki Biloba.  This is some information on Valerian
Root:

grogginess may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact
your doctor promptly. Very unlikely but report: dark urine, stomach pain. If
you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or
pharmacist.

THIS PRODUCT: Take by mouth, generally 30 to 60 minutes before
bedtime. This product should not be taken for more than 2 weeks. Follow all

or worsens or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, seek
immediate medical attention.

I've used the combination of valerian and melatonin (3 mg) with good
success.  I think it's a
good alternative to the prescription meds and view valerian as being
safe and non-addicting. I have
not experienced any side effects  as I did with some of the prescribed
meds that I tried.
