I've read many references to using ear plugs. I have a few questions.

Do people use special earplugs? What kind are preferred and where can
they be purchased?

TIA

I use inexpensive foam plugs purchased in packs of 10 or 12.  They work fine
for me.  Look for them at the drug store.

Are you talking about using earplugs to decrease sounds due to your
hyper-sensitivity -or- to reduce the constant ringing?

I have found that plugging my ears does not help at all.  It's an internal
sound so blocking out external sounds only serves to make me hyper-aware of
the internal sound.  This is why I sleep better in a room that has white
noise as opposed to dead quiet.  Dead quiet causes me to focus on my
tinnitus much more and I find it somewhat disturbing.

For me, earplugs are the *last* thing I'd want.

The 'dead quiet' thing is very true! But the ear plugs are to protect your
ears in the presence of loud music, not for everyday sounds.

Hi David,

I use the plugs to protect my hearing when I run power equipment.  You are
right, they have no effect on the T sound except that my T is louder if I
expose myself to the noise of the power equipment without plugs.

I think there is a relationship between T and exposure to very loud noises.
I was working on a construction project with a friend who knows I have
tinnitus.  He commented that, after ripping a bunch of boards with my table
saw, his ears were ringing,  His ringing subsided in a few minutes but
perhaps someday it won't.

Neither. Rather in to protect against aggravating the tinnitus from
exposure to loud music (and maybe the New York City subway).

You can also buy custom made ear plugs that are fitted to your ears
like an earmold.  I don't use earplugs.

Safety supply stores and music stores are 2 places to check. The musician's
plugs are better but more expensive.

I use custom fitted earplugs. They are expensive ... about ?150 here in the
UK. Ear moulds are taken by an audiologist  and then the plugs themselves
are made based on these moulds. Mine have 15db filters, but 25db versions
are available. Again these are expensive. Filters are about ?80.

The obvious advantage with custom made plugs is that because they have been
made for the user and only the user, they are very comfortable. I can wear
mine for relatively long periods of time very comfortably. Additionally the
sonic quality is excellent. This aspect is important to me as I'm a
musician. In summary for me at least it was definitely money well spent, but
it does depend on the application you intend to use them in. If there is a
downside apart from the expense, it's that in certain very noisy situations,
they wont offer the same protection as foam plugs.

Hope this helps.

I paid EUR. 100, which is about the same as your 100 quid. I got mine from
a "hearing aid" shop, which specializes in ear-related aids. Such shops are
dotted around all over the place here in The Netherlands, so it wasn't a
problem finding one. The earplugs are also covered by my medical insurance.

I ditto everything else you have said. They offer superb and comfortable
protection. I saw my beloved West Ham come a cropper at Cardiff in the
play-offs a couple of weeks ago, and the noise in the stadium was really
deafening. However, I came out unscathed; my T is no worse than before.
Thank god for these earplugs. I have even been told that I may easily attend
rock concerts again if I so wish.

Cheers,
Simon, The Netherlands.

Simon, I have the same ear plugs as Dave and you and echo both of your
enthusiasm for them. I have attended events with very loud music without
discomfort, though I passed on the last Nine-Inch Nails concert :-).

They are highly recommended!
