Friends, I have been afflicted by T for about seven years. I my case it has
manifested itself as a persistent ringing the ears which ranges in pitch and
loudness from time to time, sometimes hardly noticeable to very loud, I have
learned to live with it. Something new has happened and I would like advice or
comments from those who may have had something similar occur.
For the past week I have been bothered by a pressure in my left ear that seems
to close it off blocking most of my hearing ability in that ear. At night if I
lay my head on the felt side I can feel the ear plug up and than release as if
lift my head up. I can achieve the same affect by pressing my hand against the
ear. This sounded it me as wax build up which as happened before and usually a
bit of warm water & hydrogen peroxide takes care of the problem. When I tried
this yesterday it made the problem worse, I had the familiar snap, crackle &
pop but the pressure I felt in my ear became worse and now my hearing in the
left ear is almost completely nonexistent.
So does this sound like tinnitus taking a turn for the worst or bad wax build
up? I plan on making an appointment with my audiologist on Monday but I wanted
to check in with other sufferers of tinnitus.
Thanks, Steve

Make sure you see the doctor in addition to the audiologist. It
sounds a little like it could be congestion elsewhere (sinuses,
eustachian tube) that is pulling on your eardrum giving you that full
feeling and affecting your hearing. I get it all the time associated
with seasonal allergies and swelling of the sinus membranes.

Same thing happened to me Steve about 3 months ago. Wax is my worst enemy as
it make everything 10 times worse. I lost nearly all my hearing but after a
microsuction session to remove the wax and a course of anti-biotic eardrops,
things returned to normal. I too got that 'blocked feeling when I laid on a
particular ear. I found also that ear drops didn't do much to remove the wax
as it was so deep rooted.

Most ENT's will recommend that q-tips not be used to clean the ears because
it forces wax down the ear canal. Although I believe that this is good
advice,
what about my frequent use of ear plugs. Does that also force wax into
the ear canal?

I do use ear plugs quite a lot, anytime I run a lawn mower or snow blower. I
have really tried to protect my hearing since my tinnitus started. I am going
to my audiologist today to see what the scoop is, hopefully it's just wax,
Dave's symptoms are an almost exact match to mine. Thanks for your comments I
will let you know how I make out.

It was just wax, I am relived :) My hearing tests after the procedure showed
no change to my hearing ability since my last test. Thanks to Terri and Dave
for the input.
