My T started about one month ago and I went to the doctor and he could see
nothing wrong and advised me to come back after a week, which I did.
After a second visit he noticed some fluid in right my ear and a slight
bulge in my ear drum.
The first four days the noise was really loud but by the time the second
visit came around the T had settled to a dripping noise in my right ear.
The doctor prescribed antibiotics for the ear drum and after four days of
reduced noise there were two days of it louder (cricket type sound).
Since then I returned back to the doctor and the same treatment was given
the second time around. However this time he referred me to an ENT Surgeon.
The noise keeps alternating where I might get to days of the dripping sound
in my right ear to a high pitched noise at the back of my head. It hasn't
been as bad as the first week.
Anyhow today the ENT guy sent me next door for a hearing test and to my
surprise my hearing was better than I thought and all that was said was that
I have lost the ability to hear very high frequencies which is common for my
age. So my interpretation is that my hearing is ok.
The ENT said that losing this high frequency is probably what has caused my
T. All he did was look in my ears and said I had thin ear drums - no other
testing took place. We had a discussion and he gave me an leaflet on
Tinnitus.
I asked about the future, will it get louder etc? The reason I asked is
that the last two weeks I've had quite days (the water dripping sound in my
right ear) to the loud buzzing sound to the back of my head.
I was told that the sound may be settling down to a certain level. He didn't
seem to think it will come back as loud as the first week, whether he was
telling me this to comfort me I don't know.
Does everyone experience such levels in their T? At the moment I have about
two good days then two bads days.

...........................
YES, most do. This is called intermittent tinnitus.
However we do have members whose loudness has never varied from day one.

I have had exactly the same experience or an intermittent T. It used
to be one good day followed by a bad day. The frequency changed a bit
later on with medication. However, if I were you, I would immediately
visit one of the _licensed_doctors who have been answering questions
in ALT. These doctors for the past many years have been listening to
the painful lamentings of the T sufferers all over the world and they
have the experience! You are lucky to be in their vincinity. Why have
to look so far, while the answer is around the corner?

I've had tinnitus since 09/2003. I think the noise is always there
but sometimes I notice it more than others. Depends on how busy I am,
etc.. Like you, my ENT said I have some hearing loss in the high
frequency. The only time it really bothers me is at night when the
house is quiet and I want to sleep. My Primary Care physician gave me
elavil and ativan to help me sleep. Works great !
