There are several things you can do for tinnitus: Ask your doctor for a
prescription for one of the serotonin re-uptake inhibiters, e.g. Prozac,
etc. ( the best one with the least side effects is celexa). Talk to an
audiologist about getting a noise generator (masking device). This is worn
in the ear and helps cope with the sound. Further, it re-trains the brain
not to listen to the sound after a year or so of use. However, there is a
down side. The device is expensive. Mine cost 2500 dollars plus 30 dollar
visits once a month for adjustments and counseling.

I tried Paxil but it had a lot of side effects that were less than
desirable.  I do have an appt. with an audiologist to discuss the
possibility of a masking device.  You mention that you have one. Does it
work for you? Does it amplify the 'outside sounds'?  That is the main
concern I have with a noise generator, fearing that it will make the outside
noises too loud. I suppose you have to determine which noises you would
rather hear. I have never seen this audiologist before. When I called her
office, the receptionist put me right through to her. Her slogan is "You
really should hear what your missing."  I told her that I hope she can help
me to "Miss what I am hearing!" She seemed optimistic that she could help me
with a masking device. We shall see.

you can make a nice masker for twenty dollars.
Have the audiologist identify which sound is your T.
Have a CD made of that sound.
Wear the CD with a single ear piece in the T ear and adjust the volume to suit.

With the same CD you can play it in the good ear, reduce the volume and try to
get the affected ear T to match the reduced volume.

Good tip.

Having made an electronic device for myself that does something similar for
just a few pounds I can't understand why masking devices are so expensive.
Granted, they're miniaturised - but _thousands_ of dollars ???

Somebody making a big profit somewhere ?

The SSRI with the fewest side effects is a relative of Celexa called
Lexapro.  SSRIs differ in what type of seratonin they act upon so what
may help one person in one way will not be appropriate for another
person.

In Los Angeles, walking around with a cd and an ear piece in your ear is more
"natural" than having an aid in your ear.
