About 6 months ago, I started hearing, what I thought was the
sprinkler system turning on automatically.  Strange 'cause it normally
starts at 1AM, and it was only 9PM.  Finally I realized the noise was
inside my head.  As I'm writing this, I hear the sound; sometimes when
I'm busy I don't hear it, and when I'm in bed ready to fall asleep, I
don't hear it as well.
When I think back to what may have caused this, I know it wasn't
anything involving loud sounds like attending a concert, or having the
steroe full blast(I'm 52, and Stairway to Heaven was a long time ago)
But I do recall going to the swimmimg pool almost daily to do laps,
since my doctor felt I wasn't getting enough exercise. At first I
thought, "That's it! It must be the water."
And yet, six months later and the sound is still there.  If anyone can
relate to this and has found a way to lose the noise, please enlighten
me.

Hi and welcome.

If you have new onset tinnitus, it's a good idea to spend some time having
yourself checked out medically.  Thyroid and other hormonal influences can
cause T, as can some infectious diseases or injuries.

As to how to "lose" it, you describe the solution in your own post.  Stay
focused on other things.  When your mind or your ears are busy, they habituate
the T, or extraneous sound can mask it (white noise machine, radio tuned to
static between stations, etc...).

Wow, sound just like me about 6 years ago Tony.  The good news is that you
don't hear it when you're busy.  My money says that in another year or so
you will only hear it when you pause to listen for it and that isn't all
bad.

I'll second that. After a year or so the tinnitus attains the status of
something like birdsong, or traffic noise; you accept it so much as a
background you normally aren't aware of it at all.  And if that isn't good
enough, you can cancel it out anyway by methods such as a mild hearing aid,
or a masker.

So Bill and Steve,
I guess I simply have to get used to it, although I would have thought
that somebody might have done something or taken something to end the
hissing.

There are exceptions, Tony.  "Tinnitus" broadly describes all manner of
noises people hear.  The hissing sound is characteristic of the most common
and as yet incurable variety.  If you're having trouble getting used to it,
we can give you some tips.  I'm at a point where if I could take a pill to
make the noise go away it would have to be dirt cheap and without side
effects or I wouldn't bother taking it.

Yes you are right, not only will you get used to it, the quicker you
actually accept that you have it (not always an easy thing to do) the
quicker you get used to it!!. In a way you will end the hissing without
taking anything.

Now that is a bigger problem. I am nearly 52 and Stairway to Heaven is very
much still there!!

You'll be fine.

If this is really the case, then you are somewhat lucky. One of the
worst things about T for a lot of people is the lack of sleep because
you hear the sound when you try to go to sleep in a quiet room...

You may want to try 20 dives of hyperbaric oxygen treatment.  I
personally have done it and have seen others do it.  It does have
value for *some* tinnitus patients.  You may not be able to totally
lose the noise but if you could bring about a lower volume, that would
be a success.

The above treatment is part of the standard practice for T patients in
many non-US countries.
