The other day I was extremely sleepy and half asleep, half awake. My
ear was bothering me and I tried to clean it with a q-tip. When I
stuck the q-tip in to a certain point, my ear plugged up. It was like
the q-tip touched something and that caused the ear to plug up. It
didn't seem like it was far enough down to have pushed wax in to block
it but I don't know if was wax or not. I do have TMD/TMJ and I know
that can cause weird ear problems like a plugged ear from having fluid
in the ear, a closed eustachian tube, and something about some tiny
bone. But would anyone have any idea what would cause my ear to plug
up based on what I said happened? I went to the doctor 3 months ago
and he said I had little wax in that particular ear so I find it hard
to believe it was wax. But now that my ear is plugged up, my jaw,
neck, ear, and cheek area hurt like crazy where before they didn't
hurt. I'd go see a doctor but I don't have insurance and can't afford
to go to the doctor. My parents won't pay for it either.

I bet it is ear wax! Drip in some body warm water, let it sit for a few
minutes, then drain it out, and repeat that about ten times or so. Just drip
it in slowly. Then turn over onto a towel. See if it clears up and if it does
not then get thee to the local audiologist to have a look-see.
Also you can get an ear cleaning kit for about five bucks at any pharmacy type
store.

You may have the situation I have--sinus/allergies and a eustachian
tube that gets easily clogged. My doctor said never Q-tip except
after a hot shower--that seems to help it not get clogged. I never
Q-tip deeply, either.

Well I never use a Q-tip except this time I was kind of out of it
(extremely sleepy) when I used it. Though I think it has popped open
again so that's good.
I once tried some ear cleaning solution and I will NEVER EVER use any
of that stuff again. I got the worst earache from that. So now I just
make a yearly visit to the ear doctor. It just seems odd that 3 months
ago I had little wax (not worth cleaning) and now I have enough to
plug my ear. I wish I knew for sure. I don't want to spend $100+ to go
get them cleaned out only to find I have little or no wax, again.
Oddly, when I wake up in the morning I have a post nasal drip and
that's when I always have the most ear wax. So does that nasal stuff
or whatever drain into the ears at night or something?
When you all have a plugged ear from wax, do you feel like there's
fluid moving around in your ear?

I'm glad it's open again. I've frequently felt there's fluid moving
around in my ears--especially in heat or when exercising, and
occasionally I have a lot of trouble on airplanes. My doctor says my
eustachian tube clogs easily and I have a chronic sinus condition.
Doctors seem to agree it's a condition I have to live with and that
continually having them muck with it won't improve things.
I also have post nasal drip. And you are right--in the past, I had
been advised to use ear cleaner and sinus washes, and both only make
my ears feel and sound like fish are swimming in my head! My current
ENT advised me not to use any of those things, and I've had less
trouble since I stopped. After a hot shower, I wait for them to get
itchy in about 10 minutes and then Q-tip very gently around and not
deep. That does seem to help, probably because the hot water washes
the wax out where I can get to it easily to keep them relatively
clear.

Most persons with outer ear problems do better with keeping their wax/ cerumen.
Put baby oil or olive oil in the ears before shampoo or ANY situation where
water / soap might get into the ear. That will protect the wax from the damage
that water/ soap can cause. Removing the wax is what can bring on the itching
ears.
