I get it Richard, have done for years. All of my problems started at a loud
band rehearsal some 14 years ago when I experienced pain through the volume
of the rehearsal. The pain and sensitivity remains today but no-one has been
able to shed any light on it. I think it's a form of hyperacusis but it's
not text book because .... I can get it in the absence of noise and I can
seem to pass all loudness discomfort level tests when I've been checked out.
Like you, the soreness can last for days even weeks.

Try to avoid silence but don't employ loud noise either.......something nice
and soothing that you like is best. Soft music, nature sounds, natural water
sounds from those little table top fountains, fans.........keep a rich
auditory environment and let time pass. Things tend to improve for noise
induced conditions with this approach.
Jaw clenching can also produce referred pain to the area as can other
conditions. Be sure you have somebody look into that ear and see if there is
anything. Loud music can be like a blow or an explosion and can irritate
tissues in the middle ear space and cause ear pain, too.
Hope it gets better.
