Can substances such as Klonopin and pain medication cause Tinnitus and
hearing loss?

BTW, I  have both, take both medications, and my grandmother had menniere's.

What should I do? My hearing is currently 25% compromised and tinnitus is @
the 8000 hz level, db level unknown.

I can quit the pain meds if need be, but not the anti anxiety meds. Would it
matter anyway?

Thanks,
The Rev

2 Ultracet 3x a day for 6 months,
& .5 mg Klonopin x2 day for almost 10 years
Symptoms started with vertigo about 7-8 years ago...tinnitus started about 5
years ago
diagnosed with vestibular neuronitus, then labryhtinitus, vertigo, also
nystagmus and tinnitus.
Last audio test 8 months ago showed no decline in tonal audio testing, but
it did show a decline in word deciphering.
I have a fratured sternum, thus the scripts for the pain meds

He was taking huge doses of Hydrocodone and Oxycodone for a long time. A hearing
center (House?) documented the cases of several people with hearing loss who had
been abusing Vicodin (Hydrocodone/APAP). Another poster mentioned something
about hearing loss among Heroin addicts. Ultracet hasn't been mentioned, and is
not in the same class of drugs as these. Besides, you're not abusing the stuff.

The drugs Rush supposedly was abusing - oxycontin and vicodin - can be
ototoxic in abusive quantities so they could have been the cause of
his hearing loss.  The House Ear Institute has said that disease led
to his hearing loss but that was before there was knowledge of his
drug abuse.

Many people also report that vicodin aggravates their tinnitus under
normal dosages and avoid it if possible.  I haven't heard anyone
address the same issue with oxycontin perhaps because that is normally
prescribed in extreme cases and most people don't fit that profile.

That makes perfect sense in Limbaugh's case.  All I hear is high-pitched
whining when I tune him in.

Klonopin is a standard medication used for Tinnitus. If you are takng it on
regular Rx you are certainly not abusiing it.

K does seem to aggravate my T tho, thus I am concerned that it may be also
causing more hearing loss.
Does T and hearing loss have a 1.0 correlation? I take the K for anxiety, it
helps me also to stay clear and centered.

Over a population, there probably is a positive correlation between tinnitus
and hearing loss, but certainly it is not 100%. Clinically I have seen
people with minimal loss and screaming tinnitus and others with significant
hearing loss and without tinnitus.

Since Klonopin has been reported and is used to reduce  Tinnitus symptoms, I
suspect a different mechanism is at work here.
Sort of like when you take extra strengh tylenol for a toothache, and then you
become aware that your shoes hurt. With the toothache the shoe pain was masked.

Could be.
I just had a fractured sternum bone (ziphoid process)  removed about 5 weeks
ago (+10 year undiagnosed problem) and now it appears that the T is louder
and I have also found that I have less tolerance for innane and mundane
conversations and activities, but that might be  because I cut back on the
pain meds too.

Thanks for all of your responses :)
