I can't listen to my headphones anymore without earplugs because my right ear
has tinnitus and sometimes they just flat out hurt.  Sounds ridiculous right..
you're proabably saying, "Well just don't use headphones."  But most of the
time I listen to music when I can't be making much noise in the house like when
everyone else is sleeping cuz I have a different schedule than them.  So
thinking they'll help, they do, but now I've noticed that I've been getting
pains in my ears.. like the pains you get when you're getting an earache.. and
sometimes I think it makes my ears worse.. from wearing earplugs.  Is this
normal?

Bad idea using earplugs and headphones, I've afriend with the same
problem - he got told:-... You will get a lot more low frequency and
higher dB's hitting your heardrum as the sound will be conducted
through the earplug and you will need to have it up louder than
normal.. You will also inflame your ear canal with the plugs in all
the time and the pressure of the headphone against your ear. Recipe
for a Barotrauma.

Inflammation of the outer ear will cause pressure on your eardrum and
make your tinitus worse.

I think I'm missing something. Why not just turn down the volume so that you
don't need to use hearing protectors at the same time? Another consideration
is that it isn't the sound that is causing your discomfort, but that it is
the physical fit of the headset. Try another headset, again at a much softer
volume.

EARPAIN

1. My personal method is to clasp my hands behind my back, pull my
shoulders down, while stretching the top of the head (not the chin) to
the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
Try and train yourself to sleep flat on your back - sleeping on your
side keeps the neck muscle in a cramped position.

2. Try the appropriate neck exercises for you at:
http://www.nismat.org/orthocor/programs/neck/neckex.html
There are quite a lot there, probably too many. Just pick the ones
where you can feel the particular muscle being stretched.
Hold each one for at least 30 seconds, do them several times a day,
keep up for several weeks.

Tinnitus is a pain in the neck

ABove all things, please go to your local ear specialist and ask for an
audiologic evaluation!  You need to find out why your ears 'hurt'.  Also you
need to find out if you have any sound sensitivity issues........ok?
