Can anyonoe tell me if they know of any herbal supplements that will
help tinnitus? I've had it for several years now but just over the
past few months I feel it's getting much worse. I have moderate
hearing loss but am told that hearing aids won't help me at this
point. I need SOMETHING to help me!!!!  I'm also visually impaired so
having a hearing loss on top of that makes both impairments seem even
worse.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You can email me
at wendyjb2@juno.com.  Thanks very much.

Hi, Wendy.  Sorry you're having such a tough time with your vision and your T.

I have never seen any empirical reports here or in the scientific literature
that suggest any herbs or herbal mixtures that are useful for tinnitus; only
ever seen spam claims and alleged testimonials.

Some folks report relief from drugs like Xanax or even antidepressants.  I know
of one or two folks who say their T was made better by Gingko biloba, but
studies haven't shown this effect.  Some folks use hypnosis, or maskers, or
relaxation or TRT.  In my case, high salicylate foods can really ratchet up m
T.

Good sleep and modulating your response to stress helps.  Easier said than
done, but worth the effort.

Go for a hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment.  Half of the people in
the chamber here I am go there because of hearing problems.

So how many do they get in there at once?

About 15 but some patients are accompanied by their family members.

The name in mind is LIUWEI DIHUANG WAN.  You may find them in
Chinatown but i am not sure how authentic they are.  They are made in
Peking and made rather specifically for tinnitus.  But these pills
take a long time to work on your tinnitus.  So while it is recommended
that you take these pills, take some mineral pills at the same time to
help with the symptoms of your T.

Grapeseed was mentioned to me by my neuro-otologist as a possibility
to help with my tinnitus. I've been trying it- haven't noticed any
changes so far. Also, ginko biloba as an aid but I'm wary
of the potential side effects. I think, in general, there isn't any
"magic bullet" with herbal/alternative supplementation in helping
with tinnitus.

What's the cause of your vision impairment? How bad is it?

I have Retinitis Pigmentosa. I'm legally blind, I have no peripheral
vision, I'm partially color blind and I have night blindness. I have
enough functional vision to get by but there are obvious things I
can't do... drive, walk through crowds without assistance, see the
bucket of popcorn on my lap in a movie theater, etc. I can't read a
book or magazine because the print is too small and it's very
difficult for me to see black text on a white background, so I do
almost everything I need to do on the computer. I reverse my colors so
I have white or yellow text on a black or blue background and I
enlarge the font if necessary. Instead of reading I listen to books on
cd's. It's not a great situationg but I get by and I'm a whole lot
better off than a lot of other people so I can't complain. I was
diagnosed with RP 26 years ago when I was 12. I was able to read books
and magazines throughout college but shortly after that is when I had
to start using a magnifying glass for almost everything. Then I had my
cataracts removed and since then I haven't been able to read anything
at all without a magnifying glass. I take 15,000 I.U. of Vitamin A
everyday which is a treatment my RP specialist came up with. It's not
a cure, it's just a means to slow down the progression of the disease
and to preserve as much vision as possible. I've been taking the
Vitamin A for 10-12 years now and as of my last thorough RP evaluation
the deterioration has remained the same as it was when I first started
taking the Vitamin A. Maybe someday the Foundation Fighting Blindness
will announce all their research and testing has paid off in a cure,
but for now we just live in hope.

Wendy, sorry about the R.P. - kind of in the same boat as tinnitus in that there
isn't any effective cure for either.  Hopefully, research in the future will
be able to offer some hope for R.P. patients like yourself.  Sorry I can't give you
any pointers; I'm sure you've already seen a low vision specialist and all.
Hang in there.
