Hello,

I have recently read that one of the side effects of Prozac could be ringing
in the ears and tinnitus.

If so, is this anti depressant suitable for tinnitus patients ?

Could it aggravate the symptoms ?

Thanks,

John

It was recommended to me as an anti-anxiety drug for my tinnitus.
Side effects vary with people but i think you should take the advice
of your doctor rather than anything you read here.  You could, of
course, tell your doctor about your concern.

Unfortunately tinnitus as a side effect is automatically listed for every drug
in the PDR. It has actually been reported in placebo therapy too.

The only way to find out if this is a real or "lawyer listed" side effect is to
discuss this with your doctor.
In this way, PDR can do more harm than benefit.

I myself had to call the company and talk to the head scientist because of one
of the "lawyer listed" side effects of a medication my wife was takng to find
out if it was "true" or not.   Turns out is was a "lawyer  listed" one.

Not many people have the chance to talk to the scientists in drug
company in order to find out the side-effects.  I went to yahoo and
found out hydrochloridethiazide produces tinnitus in 3% of the elderly
users. And i am an elderly user.  The actual number may be higher than
3%.  Or it may be due to its interaction with certain kinds of drugs
for certain kinds of human bodies.  The only test of the pudding is in
the eating.  The first day i cut it out of my bp regimen, 60% of the
noise was cut down.  The second day about 80% but the frequency of the
buzz is higher and the 'tightness' has shifted to the right side of
the head.  The latter might have something to do with the action of an
added amount of Plendil on my migraine or blood vessels or these are
just correlational relationship but they are by no means imaginary.
But I do recall that my T came to me soon after I used Lodoz, which
contains hydrochloridethiazide.  I once cut it out but i thought the
silence was brought to me by ATIVAN that i was using at that time.
That is why i kept calling Ativan a tinnnitus drug.  The whole affair
is not yet concluded.  The improvement might have something to do with
the 10 days' treatment I went through prior to last Sunday.  But in
the subsequent development of Monday and Tuesday, there was no
observable improvement at all.  The observable improvement came on
Wednesday only after I cut out hydrochloridethiazide from my pills and
today it is getting obvious.  I am crossing my figure like anyone
searching.  Since I am trying everything, i am at a loss which is
responsible for which.  Perhaps you could shed some light.

My experience was that Prozac's (and just about any other anti depressant
drug's) side effect for me was jaw-clenching, which eventually caused
tinnitus.
Apparently though, each individual's reaction is different.
