Hello.. I'm a almost 41 yr old female. I'v had a sound in my left ear
for about 2 years now, it seem's like my pulse or the sound you hear if
you get an heart ultra-sound test. It is sometimes lower or quieter, not
too noticeable, and it varies in loudness when I tilt or move my head
around. My internist gave me a no dye cat scan of the head and it did'nt
show anything, so he said see a e.n.& t. doctor since it might be
related to hearing loss. I'm waiting to see the ear doctor, and wanted
your oppinion in the mean time. Thanks for any input,

Y.D.

The most important thing is how much it disturbs you.

I've heard of "objective tinnitus" acting this way.
Objective tinnitus can be heard by others. Subjective
tinnitus can not. Did your internist try to hear it?

This is pulsatile tinnitus.  There is lots of info on the net about it but
have a look at "Pulsatile Tinnitus: Recent Advances in Diagnosis", A.
Sismanis et al, Laryngoscope 104: June 1994, pages 681 - 688 for review
article.  I don't know how in the US you can get a copy of this but in the
UK you can just walk in to a public library and order it.
From my experience I wouldn't expect too much in the way of a definitive
diagnosis.  Just make sure some of the more serious vascular causes are
eliminated.

I have a page on my website about this topic as I went and gathered up current
research findings on PT.

You can check it out at:

I realize this is an old post, but I haven't been here for a while.
Anyway, you have the exact same symptoms as me. I also had an MRI
which showed nothing. The ENT referred me to a neurosurgeon who did a
cerebral angiogram and it proved to be an arteriovenous malformation
or AVM. The good news is that it's treatable by embolization or in
some cases, radiation. A good website I found is
