I have had this for about 3  months now and it just wont go away. it
keeps me awake at night and I have turned to sleeping tablets to help
getting to sleep but now even they dont work.  I bought a cd callled
'sleep easy' (from cdbaby.com) which is pretty good and I do
eventually go off to sleep BUT I would rather just go back to my old
life without the tinnitus.  Can anyone tell me if this is possible?
does it ever go away ?  ARRRRRGHHHH its driving me to despair.

Accept it and try to ignore it.  You will become accustomed to it.  I
doubt it will ever go away.  Its not the same for everyone.  Don't
fall prey to snake oil cures like GB, doctors or others selling herbal
ear tablets, acupuncture and other gimmicks.  Use ear protection when
using power tools, gasoline powered yard tools(trimmers, blowers,
mowers) and other loud noise area's to prevent further damage.

A good nights sleep is one of the best helps for me.  I used Benedryl for a
long time (Diphenhydramine Hydrocloride) 50mg.  But eventually after about
2yrs I stopped because I became habituated to the nasty loud noise
(ringing).  Also Diphenhydramine Hydrocloride dries out nose and is
dehydrating.
Now I don't notice it most of the time unless I put my mind on it.
The best thing to do is distract yourself with something to keep busy with.
I know that you want to hear of a magic cure but I've tried almost
everything and haven't fount one yet.
Be sure to get a checkup at a regular doctor and maybe a hearing specialist
to make sure that you don't have an underling condition that should be dealt
with.
Also check if you might have an allergy or toxic exposure to a chemical.

I know that it seems like hell but most people get used to the unpleasant
screaming noise eventually.

My tinnitus is as loud as the shower but when it first started it was as
loud as a bell telephone 24hrs a day.  It does vary, (lessens with enough
sleep).

I've tried vitamins herbs minerals etc. but maybe you might have a different
outcome as there are many different causes of tinnitus from drugs, toxic
chemicals, to noise medical conditions and allergies.

Remember that no matter how loud it gets, it won't hurt you.  It's just a
real pain in the a.s.

Do distraction, and avoid loud stuff.  Search old posts for some possible
ideas.

Have to agree with what others have posted. I've had in for 10 years now and
luckily mine is intermittent. When it first started I obsessed about it and
that just makes it harder to deal with. With time it has become less of a
focus. It's still bad from time to time, but dealing with the sound is not
so hard as the headaches that come with it. I've been to the ENT, and had a
MRI, there is no visible cause like a tumor or anything. It's a good idea to
have as many things checked that you can, anxiety over the unknown can only
make it worse. Maybe you may find an underlying cause that can be treated,
but if not, knowing that there is nothing wrong may help with the mental
anguish. I know that it's hard to believe but it does get better with time,
hope that this helps in some way and good luck.

I found that mine is triggered from simple sugars.  If I eliminate as much
as possible sugars, chocolate, and other simple carbohydrates such as
donuts, things from white flour (those foods that quickly go to your blood
stream as blood sugar) tinnitus decreases in about three days.  Repeat, for
me it takes about three days to show results so I have to stick with it for
the three days.

YOu may be sharing an experience that is similar to what I had.  When
my tinnitus came, it came with the nerve discomfort in the head.
Oftentimes I could not tell whether it was the tinnitus that caused my
nerve discomfort or the nerve discomfort that caused my tinnitus. The
two illnesses existed side by side.

Eventually I had my nerve discomfort taken care of by 2 treatments of
acupuncture.  The acupuncturist told me I was suffering from a pinched
nerve.

Go for a couple of treatment and see how you react to it.

Hi Liv,

Try this.  I use an ipod and I download plenty of podcasts.  I live in
the UK so I download a fair amount from Radio 4, I also tap into a
number of US sites such as CSPAN, NPR, etc., as well as the audio
version of The Economist.  I play it quietly and I fall too sleep
pretty quickly.  Music wakes me up I find.  The earphones cause little
discomfort, they just fall out and thats fine.

I know how horrific it is when you go into your bedroom at night, the
T is so much louder.  I have to say this works very well for me, and I
would give it a try...

Good luck and,

Best regards

John

Try reverse psychology on yourself.

Listen to your tinnitus and try to make it louder, if you can. Focus on it
as hard as you can and make it worse. Later you will likely find you cannot
hear it anymore and have forgotten about it.

Laugh at it. It can't hurt you. Taunt it and laugh.

Take manganese supplements, as recommended by many practitioners.

Some have their tinnitus go away but some don't.  Those that don't
could have their tinnitus cut down significantly to the point that it
no longer bothers them.

The first thing you should do is check with a doctor.  But frankly I
have very little confidence with Western or modern medical practice
related to treating tinnitus.

Why not go to a pharmacy and talk to a pharmacist and see if you can
use gingko biloba?  Many people take ginko biloba as diet supplement.
I tried it and it worked for me.

Talk to a pharmacist only, OK?

Sure you don't.  You only believe in snake oil cures.  Whatta fool!

Oh, I thought it was acupuncture?  Actually if you give up toking
crack in your bong, your head problems will clear up.

Yes, it does go away, if you let it. I have had it for nearly three
years now, and very rarely notice it. When I do take notice of it, I
forget about it a few seconds later. But, it takes time. Like 12 to 18
months time. These days I am very much back to my old life without the
tinnitus. I try to protect my ears more than I did in my old life, but
other than that, everything is the same.
One thing that helped me a lot with sleeping was "white noise". It
gave me something to listen to other than the ringing, without really
listening to anything, so to speak.
Best to you.

It probably won't go away.  I have had it for 15 years.  Mine gets
really loud if I tighten my jaw, so I am considering accupunture.
Mine is various frequencies, the highest is 12kHz.  I now listen to
book tapes to go to sleep.  My tinnitus is so loud that I can hear it in the
shower
or a jet plane, but the book tapes put me to sleep in just a few minutes.

I have a friend that tried accupunture immediately after the onset of
her tinnitus.  I worked after 8 treaments.

Protect your ears, use earplugs around anything loud.  Don't make it
worse.
