My wife has a bad case of tinnitus and been suffering for two years.
She has tried many things some of which are in progress now (e.g. more
recently treatment for TMJ). No relief yet, although things are
variable.
Very recently, she has found that the sound of cicadas or drills, etc
have made her tinnitus louder, and in fact encountering such sounds
accidentally ends up getting replicated in her head for the rest of
the day or hours after the encounter.
Is this typical or atypical? Have others experience the same thing,
and what can you suggest that has worked for you to reduce this
effect?
Thanks in advance.

I have personally found the sound of cicadas very therapeutic, as its
frequency synchronizes well with my T. But then again, the sound of
cicadas may not be synchronized with that of your wife's T.
That said, you perhaps may want to talk to an audiologist about
matching your wife's T sound with an antificial sound of the same
frequency.
If you want to know more about sound masking, you can talk to Jim
Chinnis of this group. I think sound masking technique is his
favorite.
I am sorry that your wife is still suffering from this tormenting hill
named tinnitus even 2 years after its onset. Obviously the doctors
who have been taking care of her are a bunch of hillbillies. Against
that background, I suggest you pay a visit to Murray in this group. I
am not suggesting Murray will definitely have the quick fix for your
wife but at least you know she is treated by someone who has the
experience of treating tinnitus. Most doctors do NOT have the
experience of treating tinnitus and this is not an overstatement.
