I developed tinnitus about two weeks after I start with Lipitor and have had
it continuously for the last three months.  From what I can tell, tinnitus
is reported as a side effect of statins about 2% of the time.  Does anyone
have experience with this?  Does the tinnitus go away after stopping
Lipitor?  Would switching to anothe statin make any difference?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, I don't have statin related tinnitus, but did have a great big
increase in tinnitus last summer while suffering adrenal insufficiency.
Statins suppress adrenal function, how much is still uncertain.  If
that's what's causing yours, it should go away once you quite the drug.

Placebos also have non-neglible rates of tinnitus reporting. I doubt there's
a connection with the statin.

The *only* way to find that out for *yourself* is to stop it and
observe. Perhaps you should stop it and take a diet control program or
weight loss program during the time when you are off any statin
product.

It might be associated with statins many drugs can cause tinnitus. If
it is related you need to find out. Statins have been shown to cause
myopathy. Tinnitus is easier to treat when it is new .Discuss this
this with your doctor. Thanks Vince

Hi Tom,

Stange. I used to take Lipitor, and I had no tinnitus reaction either way. I
stopped taking statins for a 9 months, but after a routine blood test
decided to go back on statins. This time, my GP prescribed me a different
statin (Simvastatin) and about 2 hours after taking my first dose my
tinnitus went through the roof.

I have no idea whether this increase is due to the statin or just
coincidental. I spoke with my GP and we decided that I would stop using this
statin. In fact we decided to use a dietary method instead and review the
situation in 3 months time.

Now, I just hope this increase is temporary.

Good luck
