I'd be very grateful for any opinions anyone here can give me about my
problem.

I've always been fanatically careful about my hearing, never going to
discos, never listening to loud music, and even covering my ears if I
have to walk past a pneumatic drill or if an ambulance or fire-engine
goes past with its siren on. And yet now, at the age of 53, I find I
have these sounds in my head. I think they have come on fairly
suddenly, but I'm not sure.

There are two sounds. One is a very high-pitched ringing in both ears,
and the other is a low hum that seems to be mainly in my right ear.
They both change if I hold my nose and puff out my cheeks, and I think
they become quieter if I breathe in deeply through my nose. I should
also point out that I always have a slightly 'full' feeling in my
head, a congested feeling under my eyes, and can feel mucus-type stuff
sliding down from the ear region to my throat if I swallow hard. I've
also had sinus trouble which in the past caused my upper molars to
ache.

The sounds seem louder when I'm lying down, and seem loudest of all
just after I've woken up.

For a couple of years I've taken the antidepressant Mirtazapine (trade
names Zispin, Remeron), but stopped taking it when I read that it is
linked to tinnitus. But now, weeks after discontinuing the
Mirtazapine, I find there's been no improvement.

I've just been to my doctor, who thinks my Eustachian tubes might be
the problem, and has prescribed Beconase. I've just started taking
this, so it's too early to tell if there'll be an improvement.

Any comments would be very welcome. Thanks.

If your problem is the eustachian tube, some patients benefit by putting the
head down with the ear towards the ground when they use the nasal product so
that it gets right to the eustachian tube opening. In other words, when you
use the Beconase, try to get it into the ear via the nose - so to speak.
This gives a more direct application to the opening.

Regrettably, the side effects of any drug list the same 101 side effects.
They are put there by the attorney and most are meaningless. Statistically
if 100 people drink water some 2% will develop tinnitus over the year and so
tinnitus is put down as a side effect of water.
Unfortunately you can't find any drug in the PDR that doesn't put down the
same side effects and so the significant ones are buried in the 101 standard
list. The only way I ever find out what are the important side effects is by
speaking to my peers.

In any legitimate research, they report 35% side effects with placebo
including tinnitus. Did your drug Zispin cause the Tinnitus? Just because
the attorney listed that as a possible side effect doesn't mean it did.

If  I sound bitter its because I am. Instead of the PDR giving useful
information that would help my patient, they list the same stupid 101 side
effects for every single drug and I have no way of knowing which is
significant or meaningful.

Pardon me while I add to the newbie caution:

Here is a small recent sampling of the bigotry and bias from the mind
of Francis Poon.

was a drunk newsman in the USA many years ago.

Actually from about 300 BC to 100 BC China did have pre- med exams to get
into medical school. Their anatomy drawings were excellent as were their
herbal treatments. One version is that one Emperor became distraught because
the doctors couldn't save his daughter's life and he ordered all the books
burned and the schools closed.
Western medicine in 16th century was far behind India medicine. They were
doing rhinoplasty and innoculation against small pox.
It wasn't until the scientific method came about that Western Medicine moved
forward. Now, if the world only had rational reasoning.
